  • Name: Nicholas POWERS
  • Given Name: Nicholas
  • Surname: Powers 1
  • Sex: M
  • Birth: 1755 in The Great Neck (Waterford), New London, Connecticut
  • Burial: Sand Pit cemetery, Waterford, New London, Connecticut
  • Note:
Nicholas and Phebe lived in New London County all of their lives and were both buried down the road from the Sand Pit cemetery outside Waterford, New London, Connecticut (Previously located at the corner of Hartford Turnpike and Douglas Lane) in what was once a small Douglas family burying ground. The Sand Pit cemetery was moved to part of the main Waterford cemetery due to construction but the small Douglas family cemetery remained in a small field down the road. One night many years ago, however, thieves stole the stones belonging to Nicholas and Phebe and their graves remain unmarked. James Douglas and his wife Sarah are still buried there. Nicholas' estate papers are listed in the Connecticut State Library at Hartford, Connecticut. There was no will, however, and his wife Phebe took care of the distribution of the estate. According to his headstone record in the Connecticut State Library, Nicholas Powers died Mar 7, 1802 at the age of 47 years. His wife Phebe died Apr 15, 1844 at the age of 56 years.

Extracted from Biographical Review of New London, Connecticut under Sarah M. Morgan (GrandDaughter of Nicholas Powers):

She is the only child of George and Sarah (Powers) Gibson, both of this section of the country. Her grandfather resided in New London until his house was sacked and burned by the British in 1781, when he settled on the farm now owned by Mrs. Morgan. Her father died here, March 23, 1835; and his widow died November 24, 1853, at the age of sixtry-four years. They are buried in the Cedar Grove Cemetery at New London.
