A letter from the Waterford Heritage Society 3rd April 2005:
    Dear Mr Powers,
Thanks for your enquiry. We do research in Co Waterford / South Tipperary. Most areas of Co Waterford do not have surviving records for 1727. I hope this information is of help to you.
    Yours sincerely,
    Michael O'Connor

    Joshua Hempstead Diary Information:
Michael's marriage is recorded on page 643 of the Diary of Joshua Hempstead, as well as in the Parkhurst Manuscript of New London and Vicinity.

United States Catholic Historical Magazine Vol II (1888) - Page 293:
"In 1807 Michael Powers died at Waterford, aged 80, and I have already quoted the death in 1811 of Daniel Byrnes of the same place. Evidently, this is a New Ireland in Connecticut long before we dreamed of it. On the lists of the fort at New London at this period are many names of Irishmen, and among the seamen who filled her ports not a few were Irish Catholics."

    Family Lore:
One researcher's family has an old tale that has been passed down through the generations suggesting that 2 Powers brothers stowed away upon a ship headed for America a long time ago. This may be one reason why Michael does not show up in any passenger manifests.

    New London Vital Statistics say:
"Michael Powers from the old country & Hannah Fox - dau - Benjamin - my cousin - Jan. 22 - 1755."

    New London Land Record Indexes:
There is no mention of Michael Powers as a grantor of lands in the New London General Index of Grantors, 1646 - 1800. (Though many mentions of Joseph, Abigail, and their children.)

Grantee Index Town Records for New London, Connecticut under the Powers surname:

Parkhurst Manuscript Early Families of New London and Vicinity, Vol. 36, pp 144 and 145:
A description of the family of Joseph Powers, his wife Abigail and his children: Ichabod, Lydia and Samuel. Some people have mistakenly thought that the Lydia on page 145 is another wife of Joseph. This, however, is untrue as the description of Lydia indicates she is the daughter of Joseph Powers. There is no mention of Michael Powers in the list of children.

    DNA Testing Evidence:
As of 11/15/2007, it has been genetically proven that Michael Powers is in no way related to Joseph Powers. My DNA and the DNA of a descendant of Joseph Powers were tested by FamilyTreeDNA and the SMGF project. Out of the 33 markers tested, we differed on 23. Obviously there are too many differences to indicate any sort of blood relationship. The two family lines are either not related or one of our direct lines contains an adoption that is not known at this time.

Information about Ye Antientest Buriall Place in New London, Connecticut:
Ye Antientest Burial Ground between Hempstead and Huntington Streets just outside of downtown New London was set aside for burial in 1652 and many of the early settlers, several of whom played important roles in this country's history, are interred there. Also in the cemetery are some of the oldest-known graves of early Black colonists. It was maintained by the town until 1793 and families owning plots continued to use it until 1845.
As were many ancient cemeteries, this one was situated on a hill providing a scenic view for the resting souls. Benedict Arnold is said to have stood at this high elevation during the Revolution in 1781 to watch his British troops conquer Fort Griswold in Groton across the river and then burn New London. Many of the gravestones were made of Connecticut sandstone and have deteriorated. Some were carved by the diarist Joshua Hempsted.
