Note: Information from the Kincaid Dispatch 1895-1908 (extracted by Daniel Davidson Powers): June 3, 1892 -Married at Garnett, Wed. May 25, Chas. Powers and Lillie Wheeler, both of this township. Sept. 5, 1902 - To Charles Powers & Lillie Powers, a boy born Sept. 1. (This would have been Raymond). Jan. 15, 1904 - Charley Powers bought the August Wehmeyer farm of 160 acres. That makes Charley 320 acres of fine land and two sets of good buildings. (Aca Powers had the west 160, Mary Powers Francis (Debs) had the middle 80 acres, and Dale Powers the east 80 acres, when I was growing up. Debs and Mary left the farm around 1943, as best I recall. Dad bought the 40 acres adjoining our farm and Dale bought the 40 acres adjoining his farm). Sept. 17, 1909 -Murray Powers, Roseville, Ill., is here visiting his cousin, Charley Powers. Dec. 17, 1909 - Charley Powers was in town wearing a very large black eye. He says he got a lick in while cutting wood. April 6, 1917 - Charley Powers is grandpa for the first time, a son having been born to his son Dale and wife last week. Nov. 16, 1917 - Charley Powers says he has made 3500 gallons of sorghum this year, which is not half enough to go around. March 1, 1918 - Charley Powers, who farms and acts as president of a bank for pasttime, reports that last year off five acres of ground he sold $900.00 worth of products. He planted sugar cane and sold from it $500 of sorghum and $400 worth of cane seed. That is nearly $200 to the acre. Sept. 9, 1920 - Charley Powers started his sorghum factory up again at his Sunshine farm. Charley is located in his new $10,000 home, 1/2 mile south of Kincaid, and moved his factory here from the old farm and has rebuilt it new. One can see the process from the cane stalk to the rich yellow sorghum. (Aca and Dale ran the sorghum mill on Dale's farm when I was going to grade school at Fairmount) Aug. 3, 1922 - Charles Henry Powers was born Oct. 17, 1864, at Avon, Illinois, and died July 28 in Kansas City, KS., being 57y. 9m. 11d. old. In 1867, the Powers family left Illinois and came to Kansas, when Charles was three years of age, settling on the old home place 41/2 miles SE of Kincaid. In March 1896, he joined the M.E. church. In 1892 he married Lillie Wheeler. To them five sons and two daughters were born, one son preceding him while in his infancy. His illness was of short duration, and his sudden death a shock to the community. He was taken acutely ill a week ago Saturday. Local doctors were at a loss as to what it was, and he was advised to go to the hospital, and he left for there on Thursday. When he arrived there and was examined, he was advised that nothing could be done. Physicians at the hospital diagnosed the trouble as uremic poisoning. His suffering was excruciating. Funeral was at the Fairview church. Interment was made in the cemetery across the road, where the parents and other relatives are buried. He leaves the wife, and sons Roy Dale, Asa (Aca) Carl, Elgie, and Lane Howard, and daughters Mary Mabel and Eulete Maud Powers, one brother and one sister.
A compilation of data from Maudine Powers Rand: "Charles Henry Powers was born 17 October, 1864 in Greenbush Township, Warren County, Illinois and died 28 July, 1922 at Kansas City, Kansas. He is buried in the Fairview cemetery. He came to Kansas with his parents when he was three years old and settled on the old home place. And it was to this place that he took his bride for the first few years of their married life. They moved to the Weymeyer place in 1904 where they lived until 1919 when they built a new home a mile south of Kincaid and lived there until his death.
Charlie, or Charley as he was usually called met Lillie Wheeler at the Osage Baptist Church near the Doc Allen cemetery. I have a couple of letters which he wrote her a month before they were married. Very sweet letters and fashionable fan stationary. They were married 25 May, 1892 at Garnett, Kansas.
Lillie Wheeler was born 26 September, 1873 in Waynesburg, Lincoln county, Kentucky. She was the daughter of William F. Wheeler and Mary Louise Pdgett. W.F. Wheeler was the son of John Robert Wheeler and Julia Thompson. Mary Louise was the daughter of George Washington Padgett and Polly Gibson.
From "The Kincaid Dispatch", Kincaid, Kansas. August 3, 1922. The community was very painfully shocked late last Friday when the word came from Kansas City that Charley Powers was dead. The physicians at the hospital diagnosed the trouble as uremic poisoning.
Mr. Powers was among our very best public spirited and dependable citizens. He could always be relied upon at any and all times. He was a kind a loving husband and father and a staunch friend, and was every day alike. The community is going to miss Charley Powers and his death is a great blow and an irreparable loss to his family who have the deep sympathy of the whole community. He departure seems doubly sad because he had just finished a beautiful home and was prepared to enjoy life to the fullest.
Rev. Ermey of the Mildred M.E. church, assisted by Rev. Dussair of the Kincaid M.E. church and Rev. Bailey of the Kincaid Baptist church conducted the services.
A traveling salesman had an organ on a wagon and brought it in the house one evening and played and sang. Dad bought it. This was in 1899 or 1900. Mom would chord and Dad would fiddle. He also played the zither."
