    John Kelly (1839-1916)
John Kelly married Betsy Corlett in old Kirk Braddan church in 1859. John was a stonemason and builder by trade and he set up in business as a builder in Douglas. At this time the town was expanding rapidly, so his business thrived. One of his achievements was his involvement in the building of the Villiers Hotel at the southern end of Douglas promenade. The hotel became a famous landmark, and stood on this prestigious corner site for well over a hundred years. The earliest illustration of the Villiers Hotel is an engraving (q.v.) said to be from the early 1880s.

As well as being involved in the construction of hotels, John Kelly also built residential housing, including Laureston Terrace in Ballaquayle Road in what was then known as "Upper Douglas". Apparently, when the terrace was first built, the properties were slow to be sold, because they were away from the centre of the town. John's wife Betsy suggested that if they themselves moved into one of the properties others might follow. So in 1892 the Kelly family moved into 4 Laureston Terrace - and soon the other properties were selling like hot cakes! The Kellys remained at 4 Laureston Terrace until all their children had grown up and left home. When they lived at Laureston Terrace, John Kelly and his family were members of the local church, St Thomas's in Church Road, Douglas, where John Kelly was a sidesman. The church was built in the 1850s.

In 1900, John Kelly's business suffered a catastrophe when Dumbell's Bank, where he held his accounts, collapsed. He lost all his money. To enable him to pay his workers' wages and settle his debts, he sold off all the considerable properties he owned and was left with just the house he and his family were living in at 4 Laureston Terrace. When the family had left home, John and Betsy moved two houses down the hill to 2 Laureston Terrace. Here John died in 1916 and Betsy eight months later in 1917.

From the Manx Quarterly no 17:
    JOHN KELLY,
    Died June 4th, 1916,

A highly respected Douglas tradesman, in the person of Mr John Kelly, builder, was removed by death on June 4th. Mr Kelly, who was 78 years old, resided at Laureston-terrace, and during his closing years he had a retired life. At one time, however, he was one of the busiest men in the town, and during the great building booms he took a very important part in constructive work. By trade he was a mason, and he in this capacity was responsible for the stone and brick work in connection with the erection of many of the finest residential and business premises in Douglas. These included several houses on the Loch Promenade, also the Masonic Hall, while he undertook building operations on an extensive scale in the upper part of the town. Mr Kelly was for a great many years a member of the Mona Lodge of Oddfellows, and served in all the chief offices in that lodge. For forty years he was a great supporter of and constant attendant at St. Thomas's Church; and he served for many years as a sidesman. His recreations were bowling and gardening, and he was very successful in following up each of these hobbies. Mr Kelly was highly respected by all who knew him for his sterling honesty and commonsense and his kindliness of manner. Though of a rather quiet, retiring disposition. he had a host of friends. For a few years he served as a member of the old board of Douglas Town Commissioners, and rendered good service on the Improvement Committee; but he retired from office before the incorporation of the borough in 1895. Mr Kelly leaves a widow surviving, and several grown-up sons and daughters. The funeral tool: place on Thursday morning, and was largely attended. interment was at Douglas Borough Cemetery.
