Joseph was born in Millow, Bedfordshire on 17 May 1856, the son of
Susan Winters, The fathers name is not listed on the
birth certificate. Little is known about his young life, but we do
know that he worked as a farm labourer on a farm in Cambridgeshire
before he came to New Zealand.

He left England on the ship Baron Aberdare from London with 102
passengers captained by R Edmonds as an assisted immigrant
on 8 December 1874, arriving Auckland on 19 March 1875, travelling
north to Aratapu in the Northern Wairoa.

He met Amelia Elizabeth Benger there, and they were married at her
home in Arapohue in April 1883.

Joseph had been prone to mental illness and on March 3, 1888 was
admitted to Oakley Hospital suffering from a mental breakdown,
suffering for a period of 1 month due to malnutrition. He was to
remain there until 18 November when he was released back to Te
    Kopuru.

However, he was to suffer another breakdown, and on April 9, 1892,
was readmitted at age 39. He was to stay until his death which was
caused by liver trouble. He had died at 8.30 am in the morning.

He was survived by his 2 sons, William and Harold.
