July 1850 Census: Thomas (widower) & 7 children (youngest age 10) were in Middlebury Township, Knox County, in Jul 1850. He was farming (110 acres, 85 improved) and valued his real estate at $2,500. On the Agricultural Schedule for that year, he valued his livestock (5 horses, 3 milk cows, 10 ?other? cows, 30 sheep and 6 swine) at $383. He had produced 100 bushel of wheat, 200 bushel of Indian corn, 50 bushel of oats, 110 pounds of wool, 100 bushel of Irish potatoes, 70 bushel of buckwheat, $10 worth of orchard products, 200 pounds of butter, 15 ton of hay, and 200 pounds of maple sugar. He had $20 worth of home-made manufactured products and had slaughtered $70 worth of livestock through the year.
?Thomas Townsend located on the A. M. Townsend property, one and one-half miles north of Fredericktown in 1808. He was one of the Friends from Maryland, and true to his Quaker principles, kept a station on "the underground railroad." It is related of him that he would harbor as many as twenty fugitive slaves at a time, and when they were sufficiently recruited, set their faces toward the north star, and send them on their way rejoicing. Mr. Townsend died March 18, 1859, aged seventy-eight. He has no representative now in the township.?,
According to Thomas?s hand-written memoirs (in the hands of his descendants), he was born in Bucks Co, PA (not Maryland, as supposed). He apprenticed as a shoe maker, returned to work on the family farm for a few years, then relocated to Maryland for a few years before moving to Ohio. He and Elizabeth had 4 children, with the youngest dying at age 4 months and Elizabeth dying of Consumption a year later. The youngest of the three remaining children, a girl, was raised by her grandmother (Elizabeth?s mother); Thomas kept the boys with him.
Thomas and Ruth (2nd wife) both have tombstones with nothing but the name readable at the Friends Cemetery in Middlebury Township, Knox Co, OH.Page: Middlebury Twp; 18 Jul 1850; Sheet 6BPage: History of Middlebury Township; p 505
