I believe there is strong circumstantial evidence that this is Isaac (D or A) Manson of Madison Co, AL, in the 1850 & 1860 census, but this is not proven.

    2008-11-01

Isaac A Manson is listed in the 1840 index for Madison Co, AL at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~dcglover/1840.txt.

Isaac A marries a Nancy Winn in Madison Co, 1842. From http://co.madison.al.us/mcrc/groomsMMc.html:

    Manson, Isaac A. Winn, Nancy Vol. 4 p. 662 29 Nov 1842

In 1850, Nancy Manson is shown with a Wyne child and a Manson child, but not living with Isaac D.

    From http://www.us-census.org/pub/usgenweb/census/al/madison/1850/pg0471a.txt:

    26 652 652 Manson Isaac D 45 M Black=Smith S Carolina

    From http://www.us-census.org/pub/usgenweb/census/al/madison/1850/pg0459a.txt:

I believe the evidence is clear that Isaac D is the father of Lizzie now, esp with the finding of Joel last year (didn't really gel how conclusive this is until now). I do not believe this is the same person listed as Isaac A in Madison Co, AL in 1860.

Also, Nancy would not be the mother of the children who are still with Isaac in 1850, and may not be the mother of Sarah, but probably is.

In fact, we need to dig a little deeper into which Isaac married Nancy, and if there are really two or one Isaacs.

There is a Fannie Manson who marries in Gregg Co, TX, in 1893:

    Manson, Mrs. Fannie
Married: Jan 23, 1893 in: Gregg, TX
    Gender: F
Source info: microfilm reference numbers File name: 1468351 through 1468353
    Spouse's gender: M Spouse's name: Dixie, Mack

    (From http://www.txgenes.com/TxGregg/Vitals/MarriagesTo1900Ms.html)

I wonder if she is related to all of these Marshall Mansons.

There is a John Calvin Manson in the TX death index 27 Apr 1989 in Dallas, Dallas Co, TX.

"Upon further review," I still don't see that it is absolutely clear that Isaac A and Isaac D are the same - although it seems highly coincidental that in the only census where Isaac A is not present, Isaac D is, and that they are both blacksmiths. Still, Isaac D reports SC as his birthplace, Isaac A reports TN in 1860, and in 1860 there is a 14 yo William W with Isaac A who is not found with Isaac D or Nancy in 1850.

In 1860 Isaac A's wife is Eliza, and in 1870 she is found with the same 2 children in Warrenton, but no Isaac, who would have been over 60, so one guesses he has died.

A posting from 2008-05-17 that I had forgotten about at http://genforum.genealogy.com/manson/messages/460.html:

I'm not sure if this is the Isaac Manson you are seeking. ..My Isaac Manson b 1805 father is William S. Manson b 19 Nov 1790 South Carolina. Isaac is his son who lives in Centerville, Iowa in 1838...He may have moved back to Alabama after his wife died. William S Manson and his father William Manson lived in Alabama for a while.

He has a half brother Sinclair Manson who also lives in Huntsville, Alabama.

Malinda's name is written in a page of the family bible, but I don't know why it is there....interesting though.

And one from 1999-07-25 I had not previously noticed :

    http://genforum.genealogy.com/cgi-bin/pageload.cgi?isaac::manson::74.html:

looking for info on isaac manson who married sarah maxwell.they lived in centerville, iowa.

    And this follow-up 2008-05-25 :

If this is the correct Isaac William Manson--he is the son of Reverend William S Manson (methodist Episcopal Church) and Isabella Gibbs from Jefferson County Tenn. WM and wife and Isaac emigrated to IA after WM's father died in TN. Isaac has several borthers and sisters, including a brother William T Manson who remained in TN.

I am trying to follow up on Isaac...he died before his mother and father, but of what? I think he died in Ala or ARK..not sure.

    From 2002-05-17 at http://genforum.genealogy.com/manson/messages/291.html:

AM LOOKING FOR ANY INFO ON ANDREW OR SINCLAIR MANSON. ANDREW WAS BORN 1809 IN ILL, BIRHT PLACE OF HIS FATHER SINCLAIR (SINCLER), IS UNKNOWN TO ME. I DO KNOW HE MARRIED ROSANNA THOMPSON IN WARREN COUNTY, KY IN 1807, AND PURCHASED LAND IN JACKSON COUNTY, IL IN 1814. FROM THEIR HE MOVED TO ARKANSAS. ANY INFO WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.

    From 2006-04-30 at http://genforum.genealogy.com/manson/messages/416.html:

Jane Manson was the daughter of William and Mary Manson. I have William's Rev. War Pension Record in which Jane is listed as a daughter. Jane was born 13 February 1793, according to the family Bible record filed by Mary when she sought her pension after William's death on 3 July 1838 in Jefferson County, TN.

William was born 13 November 1750 in Caithness, Northern Shires, Scotland, according to his Affidavit. He emigrated to the U.S. in 1775, landing at Savannah, Georgia. Mary's affidavit states they were married on 13 October 1783, but does not state where the marriage took place.

This family moved a lot. According to information in the Pension Record they were living in Savannah, GA in 1775. In the Spring of 1776 moved to Broad River, Wilkes County, GA; in July 1776 enlisted in Rev. War under Captain Bowie, serving 15 months; October 1777 lived three miles from Fort Independence, Rocky River; 1778, moved lower down upon Calhoun Creek; 1789 moved to Pendleton County on branch of Savannah River (think this is South Carolina, but not sure); in 1803 moved to Warren County, KY; 1807 moved to Madison County, Alabama (then the Mississippi Territory); 1812 moved to Blount County, Tennessee, then the record has been crossed over and I interpret it to say he moved back to Alabama where he lived for 7 years; then in 1823 moved to Jefferson County, TN, where he was living when he filed for his Pension on 7 September 1832.

His oldest child listed in the Bible record is Sinclear or Sinclair Manson, born 10 December 1772. Since William did not emigrate until 1775, I would assume Sinclair was born in Scotland, and since William and Mary did not marry until 1783, it would indicate that William was married twice, his first marriage having taken place in Scotland. Sinclair married Susanna Thompson on 21 August 1807 in Warren County, KY, and migrated to Illinois, then to Arkansas.

The record lists his other children as William Sutherland Manson, b. 19 November 1790; Betsy Manson, b. 23 January 1797, married 18 February 1820 in Jefferson Co, TN to Barnet Smith; Maryann Manson, b. 3 February 1799; Rebecca Fields Manson, b. 20 May; and Isaac Ambrose Manson, b. 29 December, married 30 December 1832 in Jefferson Co, TN to Rachael Tanner. The page of the Bible listing Rebecca and Isaac's birth year looks like it has been creased or torn and the years of their births are not readable.

I acquired this record since my ancestor, Blaney Hazelwood, was living between William and his son, William S. Manson, in the 1830 Jefferson County Federal Census and near William S. Manson in the 1840 census record, and many have indicated that Blaney's wife, Catherine, was William's daughter. However, the Pension Record does not bear this out, and since all Catherine Hazelwood's census records state she was born in Virginia, I do not think she is William's daughter. His record never indicates that he lived anywhere in Virginia and Catherine is not listed on the Bible page.

I will share a copy of this pension record with you and with anyone else who is researching this family, if you send your snail mail address to .

    And from 2002-05-16 at http://genforum.genealogy.com/manson/messages/290.html:

Amongst the Dorsey families of the south, the name William Manson Dorsey or, some cases, the name Manson is used with some frequency. Looking for a link, another researcher has found a William Manson living only a page away from William Dorsey in the 1790 census of the Old Pendleton District, SC. We would appreciate hearing from anyone who might know who this gentleman was and how, if at all, he might be connected to the Dorsey family?

From http://co.madison.al.us/mcrc/groomsMMc.html, all 3 of these become significant now:

    Manson, Isaac A. Winn, Nancy Vol. 4 p. 662 29 Nov 1842 Manson, W. W. Schrimsher, Eliza J. Vol. 5 p. 386 31 Aug 1867 Manson, William Manson, Rebecca T. Vol. 3 p. 065 02 Jan 1821
