Name: Diocletian "Dio" C. Davis
Change Date: 8 JUL 2011
Birth: 19 SEP 1824 in St. Helena Par., LA 1 2
Death: 9 NOV 1903 1
Robert Parker has Dioclesian (sic) "Dio" C. Davis as the husband of Missouri Ann Kent , brother of Thomas H. Kent. An LDS Church member submitted an IGI record for the marriage of Diocletian C. Davis to Missouri Ann Kent on 8 Feb 1852 in St. Helena Pa., LA. Another LDS IGI record has the same St. Helena Pa. marriage on 9 Feb 1852.
My desk enclycopedia has Diocletian as the spelling for his ancient Roman Emperor namesake. The spelling of "Dioclesian" is used for a female prophetess in a 17th century opera.
T.P. Moseley has birth & death data for Diocletian C. Davis, son of Goodrum Davis & Rebecca Kendrick, and his 8 Feb 1852 marriage to Missouri Ann Kent in St. Helena Pa., LA. A few researchers, such as Angel Stonecypher, apparently have a common source which has their marriage instead on 9 Feb 1852 in Kentwood, Washington Pa., LA. Kentwood (founded in 1893, see below) is now located in Tangipahoa Pa., which was formed in 1869 from western Washington Pa. and eastern St. Helena Pa., and from Livingston & St. Tammany Parishes to the south. St. Helena Pa. bounds East Feliciana Pa. to the east. Missouri Ann Kent's parents, John B. (Bailey) Kent & Mary D. Harrell, resided in East Feliciana Pa. where they were married in 1829. But, Robert Parker stated that the estate of Mary D. Harrell and John Bailey Kent was probated in St. Helena Pa. and that he had a copy of the probate records. Some researchers have that Diocletian & Missouri named a son John Bailey Davis, whom Robert Parker mentioned in his 2001 posting. I am not sure but I am keeping the above 8 Feb 1852 marriage in St. Helena Pa.
I should note what originally appeared to me to be an interesting coincidence. Eliza J. Kent, of E. Feliciana Pa., married D.C. Davis, of St. Helena Pa., on 31 Oct 1848 in E. Feliciana Pa., LA. I now believe D. C. Davis is the same man as the subject Diocletian, who researchers say had a 1st wife in 1850 St. Helena Pa., LA, named Alvina or Alvira b. ABT 1830 LA. That 1st wife likely died before Diocletian married Missouri Ann Kent in 1852. See my notes for his 1st wife, Elvia Eliza J. Kent, for more.
Diocletian Davis, age 25 Farmer b. LA, heads household #125 (page 185A) in the Eastern Dist. of St. Helena Pa., LA on 16 Aug 1850. With him is wife Alvira and infant daughter Mary L. Davis. His father, Goodrum Davis, age 61 Farmer b. GA, heads nearby household #112 (page 185A) on 15 Aug 1850.
Next door to Goodrum Davis in 1850 is household #111 of Amos Kent, age 36 or 38 Farmer b. NH. Amos is the grandfather of my correspondent, Amos Kent, who replied to my query in 1977 that his grandfather (b. 1811 in NH) came to New Orleans by boat (in 1829) and walked the levee to Baton Rouge, before drifting into St. Helena Parish. Amos' younger brother, Frederick (b. 1814 NH), came later and settled in Iberville Parish. The town Kentwood was chartered in 1893 and named by the postmaster to honor Amos Kent and the lumber business he established near an early railroad line in Tangipahoa Parish. My correspondent wrote that their family has no blood relation to my Kent ancestors. He knew about my Kent family.
