Our GEDCOM focuses mainly on direct ancestors of my wife and me. I also have lines who were believed to be ancestral but later found to be unlikely.

  • ID: I19125
  • Name: Benjamin Thacker
  • Sex: M
  • Change Date: 11 FEB 2010
  • Birth: BEF 1759 in Goochland Co., VA (of) 1
  • Death: AFT 9 FEB 1818 in Barren Co., KY 2
  • Note:
I have included him in my database because many researchers have confused Benjamin Thacker of Goochland Co., VA, with the younger (christened 1759) Benjamin Akers Thacker Jr. of Fluvanna Co., VA. See my notes for that Benjamin Thacker Jr. for a more complete discussion of the conflicting beliefs of various researchers and the evidence they present. I have not tried to determine the father of the subject Benjamin. In 1744, Goochland Co. was divided and the area presently known as Fluvanna Co. became a part of Albemarle Co. Fluvanna was formed from Albemarle in 1777.

A very helpful correspondent, Clarence Coley, found tax and deed records which show that the subject Benjamin Thacker who, as an apparent adult (b. BEF 1759), bought land in Goochland Co. in 1779 and remained in Goochland Co. until 1805 or 1806. This is based on his presence on the personal property and land tax lists for 1785 and 1787-1793. Benjamin Thacker is also on the Goochland Co. land tax list in 1786 and on the personal tax list for 1794-1806. I found Benjamin Thacker, with 1 white male age 16-20, there on the personal tax roll on 11 Mar 1789.

Coley also found the Ancestry.com 1787 marriage record of Benj. Thacker to Anna Grubbs (said to be born in 1754) in Goochland Co. and believes that Anna was an earlier wife of Benjamin Thacker of Goochland Co., who later married Nancy Clark. USGenWeb transcriptions of Goochland Co. marriage bonds covering 1730 - 1789 have no Thacker marriages at all. Sue Thacker's (she discussed below) LDS ancestral file has the marriage of Benjamin Thacker (who died in Barren Co., KY) to Nancy Clark on 30 Jun 1805 in Louisa Co., VA. Dan Eccle's LDS Pedigree Resource File has the same date and place but in 1803. The Louisa Co. USGenWeb site's marriage book transcription doesn't go back that far but this marriage jibes with an 1805 Goochland Co. land deed that Clarence Coley found for that Benjamin Thacker with Nancy's name on it. It also fits with the Benjamin of Barren Co. whose will does name wife Nancy, as dicussed below. Goochland Co. was formed from Albemarle Co. in 1744. Coley says that this Benjamin is never referred to as a "Jr." in Goochland Co. records and believes he is the Benjamin who went to Barren Co., KY. I agree.

Scott Simpson documents that Benjamin Thacker executed a 9 Feb 1818 will in Barren Co., KY, with wife Nancy and children, including sons Abel, Allen, Richard, Abner and Turner. Clarence Coley found that Benjamin Thacker of Goochland Co. paid the 1805 personal tax for Allen Thacker, who is almost certainly his son. My correspondent, Sue (Thacker) Saathoff, is the gg-granddaughter of Allen Thacker & wife Harriet Vaughn. Sue and others believe that Allen was born in Fluvanna Co., which is contradicted by his parent's marriage in Goochland Co. and his father's extended presence there as discussed above. I have read that Allen was born along the James River, a river which formed the southern boundary of Goochland, Fluvanna and Albemarle counties in 1787. Sue is the contact person for a Family Tree DNA male Thacker who provided test kit # 161227 samples for 25-marker Y-DNA testing to FTDNA for the THACKER surname project. His results are also posted on Ysearch as ID PXKM3. That testee descends from the subject Benjamin Thacker through his son, Allen. Unfortunately, there were only three testees who had provided test kits for the project as of Nov. 2010, one of whom appears to have had the surname POTTS.
