Name: Nicholas T. Bull \ Turnbull
Change Date: 11 FEB 2010
Birth: ABT 1785 in Greene or Grainger Co. (possibly), TN 1
Death: ABT 1855 in Lincoln Co., KY (probably) 2
Nicholas Bull was not listed in 1806 when his VERY LIKELY, but unproved (by documents), father was listed. He was listed only in the 1807 Knox Co., KY, tax list and I am placing him as a son of John Bull Sr. My correspondent and descendant of Nicholas, Richard Hoover, arranged for a distant maleTurnbull cousin to have his Y-DNA (kit #102447) tested by Family Tree DNA. The exact match of his first 37 markers with those of a testee who descends from John Bull Sr. indicates that the two testees have a 93% probabilty that they both descend from a most recent common ancestor (MRCA) who lived within the past 6 generations of the testees. I'm convinced that MRCA was John Bull Sr. who is the 6th generation above his descendant testee and would also be the 6th generation above the testee from the subject Nicholas' line.
Richard Hoover learned that in 1806 Nicholas Bull served on jury duty in Grainger Co., TN, where his likely father's family had resided until 1806. John Bull Jr., known son of John Bull Sr., named a son Nicholas b. 1825. Dusty Pilgrim found the likely marriage of the subject Nicholas in Whitley Co. KY marriages: Turnbull, Nicholas (to) Petry, Sidney (on) July 14, 1822. Whitley Co. was formed in 1818 from southwest Knox Co., KY, close to where the Bulls resided in 1807. I did not find any Bull, Petrey, or Turnbull in a complete set of 18 census page images for 1820 Whitley Co. But, descendants Mary (Turnbull) Hoover & son Richard found the household of Nicholas T. Bull counted with his known wife & children in 1830 Whitley Co. and as N.T. Bull residing next to Adam Petries in 1840 Whitley Co. This peculiar use of T. Bull and Turnbull was practiced by some of the Knox. Co. Bulls, mainly after they left KY.
Also see my page for Isaiah Bull who is on the 1809, 1810 & 1811 Knox. Co., KY, tax lists and is listed in 1809 as also owning land in Lincoln Co., KY. I don't think Isaiah is closely related to Nicholas because Isaiah resided in Pulaski Co., KY, in 1820 and died in 1838 in Rockcastle Co., KY, which was formed in 1810 from Pulaski, Lincoln, and northwest Knox Co., KY, not very close to where Nicholas probably resided in 1807.
M. (?) Turnbull is listed on the Lincoln Co., KY, tax list in 1841, then as Nicholas or N. Turnbull there in 1843, 1844, 1846, 1847, and 1848. Nicholas Turnbull was granted a patent for 100 acres on Buck Creek on 1 Jul 1845 in Lincoln Co., KY, for land surveyed 7 Dec 1844. He was granted another 50 acres there on 13 Jul 1846 which had been surveyed on 6 Dec 1845. George Turnbull also appears on the 1848 Lincoln Co. tax list. George W. Turnbull & Martin C. Ross were granted a patent for 200 acres on Buck Creek on 1 Jun 1865, surveyed on 22 Feb 1865. I'm pretty sure that this is the subject Nicholas Turnbull and his son George W. Turnbull. My notes for wife Sidney Petrey say that the children of Sidney's parents settled in Whitley and Lincoln Co., KY. The household (#429) of Nicholas Turnbull (age 65 b. KY??) was listed in 1850 Lincoln Co. but his apparently widowed wife headed household #1139 on page 168 there in 1860. His children Fanny, George & William all gave their parents as TN natives in the 1880 census.
