Note: Diana Ballinger said that Richard is her 3ggrandfather and was the brother of John Bull Jr., husband of Eleanor "Nelly" Collins. Richard married in Grainger Co., TN, 4-1/2 years after John Bull married Nelley Collins there also. My correspondent, Sherry Jordan, kindly sent me an Ancestry.com image of the 1805 marriage bond (cover page only) of R. Bull to F. Bray. Another correspondent, James Edward Turnbull, helped by sending me another Ancestrycom image with the actual 11 May 1805 marriage bond between Richard Bull and Fanney Bray. The bond was signed and sealed by Richard Bull and John Ogan.
John Bull and (son) Richard Bull are petitioners on 19 Jan 1799 in Grainger Co., TN, seeking to prevent any part of Grainger Co. from being split off to Jefferson Co., TN. Grainger Co. was formed from Hawkins & Knox Cos. in 1796 when TN was admitted as a state. The 1800 & 1810 census records for Grainger Co., TN were burned during the War of 1812. Richard is said to have moved his family (probably from Grainger Co., TN) to Knox Co., KY, in 1811-1813. He first appears on the Knox Co. tax list in 1815. He owned a mill on Clear Creek in an area of Knox Co. that partly went into Harlan Co. in 1819 and completely into Josh Bell Co. in 1867, according to Mary Lou Hudson. Richard Bray says that Richard and Fanney lived in AL & MO before returning to the Clear Creek area of then Bell Co., KY. However, I haven't seen the evidence to support that belief. Richard is on the Knox Co., KY, tax lists annually between 1815 and 1829, with the exception of 1818. In 1826, there is a Richard Sr. and Richard Jr. Dusty Pilgrim found the 1820 Knox. Co. census household of Richd Bull (age 26-45, b. 1775-1794)next to Nelly's brothers Solomon & Levi Collins. Richard and his wife have one over age 45 female living with them in 1820, who was likely his mother since his father wasn't found in 1820 Knox Co., KY. Sherry Jordan found his as the only Bull household in 1830 Knox Co., KY, likely with his age 70-79 father. Richard Bull witnessed the 1822 Knox Co. will of neighbor, Joseph Haynes. Richard Bull age 60-69 is last counted in 1840 Knox Co., KY, with a son and daughter each age 15-19. The daughter is likely Martha Jane; the son could be either James or Robert.
