    "23 June 1797 .... Penelope Spence unmarried woman daughter of George Spence, labourer ------ and James Bett, wright, was mentn as the father given, committed in March last. He gave in his declr in writing which admitted unlawful connectn on March 10. no further interrog until birth of her child as woman corresp with him in her decr ...." (born Jan 1798)

    1798 January 18th Penoplope Spence had a daughter born and James Bett as she affirms is the father of the child and baptised 31st inst named Elspet. Witnesses James Thomson and Andrew Fleemingston and several others who came to hear the word and sacrament administered.
