Tlingit elder Margaret Thomas, 79, died at her Main Street home Thursday surrounded by friends and family members. She had cancer.
Thomas was eulogized at a Saturday memorial service as a loving mother and friend of young people.
Her passion for local basketball was reflected by the young men who bore her casket. Pallbearers Chris Dixon, Link Fannon, Stuart DeWitt, Daniel Martin, and Ray and Danny Pardee all played on recent Haines Glacier Bear basketball teams.
Thomas was a regular at Glacier Bear games as well as Dick Hotch Memorial and Gold Medal tournaments. She won the Fan of the Year award at this spring?s Hotch tournament, and was named the recipient of Haines High School?s Block H Award.
Thomas also was an active member of the Alaska Native Sisterhood and the Lynn Canal Post 12 American Legion Auxiliary, and served as the group?s president and as Southeast regional president in her 38 years in the organization.
Legion Auxiliary past president Jean Clayton said Thomas was an asset to the organization. "She was so helpful with anything we did. When she got too infirm to work any more she would donate money or fruit for breakfasts."
A member of the Klukwan Ganaxteidi, Thomas was born in Klukwan in l920. She was the eldest child of Willard and Mildred Hotch Sparks. The family lived in Klukwan until l930, when it moved to Haines.
Thomas attended Sheldon Jackson School in Sitka, working summers for Haines Packing Company. But her main occupation was raising her four children as a single parent, according to Clayton. "I knew Margaret from the time my family moved to Haines in l946. She had all those kids to raise, it was a tough job and she kept right at it."
Daughter Chris Martin said Thomas shared her wisdom and love freely with her children. "We were all very close. She holds the family together."
Martin said Thomas also was an accomplished button blanket and moccasin maker. Haines High School seniors regularly wear Thomas? moccasins at graduation ceremonies, and in l998 Thomas made a set of moccasins for members of the Glacier Bear boys basketball team. "She was so proud of that," Martin said.
Neil Erickson, who served as an escort at Saturday?s memorial service, said Thomas was always willing to take time to visit. "She was one of the nicest people. I hadn?t visited her for a few months and she told me that she was going to come to the bar where I worked and sit there until I came and talked with her."
Margaret Thomas is survived by brothers Evans Willard, Ron Sparks, David Light and sister Irene Rowan, sons Cliff and Bill Thomas and daughter Chris Martin, grandchildren Danny, Gabe, Cole, Rhiannon Thomas, and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was buried at the Haines Cemetery.
