John and Rebecca's first child was Lawrence Paul Baughman who was named for his paternal grandfather Lawrence and his paternal great-grandfather Paul. He was born on 12 May 1834 in Red Bank Township, Armstrong County (now Clarion Co.). He moved with the family in 1850 when they migrated to Beaver Township, Jefferson County. He was engaged in the lumber business with his father. In 1857 he married Sarah Shields who was born on 4 June 1837. The 1860 Census for Beaver Twp. showed that Lawrence and Sarah were living next door to Lawrence's father. Lawrence and Sarah's household included their daughter Elizabeth, Sarah's mother, Jane Shields and two of Sarah's young brothers.
Lawrence was drafted for service in the Civil War by the lottery wheel at Waterford, Erie Co., for the draft of 26 August 1863. He was ordered to report to Waterford no later than 23 September 1863. I have not discovered how long he served and in what unit.
Indications are that Lawrence entered into the stage-coach and freight business after the Civil War. He drove stage-coach between Brookville and Ridgeway, Elk Co., eventually moving his family to Ridgeway. There is a story passed down through the family that Lawrence measured the distance from Brookville to Ridgeway. He supposedly did this by tying a piece of rope on one of the front wheel spokes and counted the revolutions the wheel made. Its a good thing the horses knew the road. Another story was that this business required Lawrence to make numerous trips to Virginia to buy and trade horses. On these trips he always brought back tobacco for his mother to smoke in her corncob pipe.
Lawrence and Sarah had the following children:
Elizabeth J. born 12 April 1858, died 19 October 1876. Edward M. born about 1862. Robert Isaac born about 1863, married Emma R. Wingert. David A. born about 1865, married Mattie Segers, moved to Washington State. Anna Mary born 13 December 1866, married Phillip Ward, moved to Washington State. James C. born about 1869. John N. born about 1871. William H. born 1872. Addison E. born about 1874, moved to Washington State. Myrtle M. born about 1876, moved to Washington State.
Lawrence's wife Sarah died on 17 Feb 1885 and was buried in Belview Cemetery, Jefferson Co. Lawrence married for the second time on 23 March 1886 to Elsie J. Wynkoop. Lawrence died on 11 December 1902 and was buried in Belview Cemetery, Jefferson Co.
