Text: Christina, I sent this out earlier, but mis-spelled your email. This is my line from John starting with his son Joseph.
Vernon, here are many notes on Joseph Bishop and his children that I have gathered over the years. He was clearly born in South Carolina per Census records. It could be a mistake that he was born in SC, but not likely. I hope this helps

Exec: William B. Tidwell-- Wit: Stephen Malone; Middleton W. Brown-LaGroon Redmond, Campbell County Researcher
LaGroon forwarded your e-mail to me. I am the president of the Old Campbell County Historical Society and am glad to help you if I can.
I assume you already have the will of Joseph Bishop, and, the marriage of Joseph to Martha Holland, 15 Feb. 1843.
I searched the cemetery surveys the society has of the Campbell Co. area and did not find Newton Benjamin or his wife, Fannie. I also did not find Joseph or Martha Bishop. They may be in a family cemetery we have not found.
I did find, in an old store ledger from Campbellton: Joseph Bishop purchased goods at the store on 6 Feb. 1854.
I also found Joseph Bishop drew in the 1832 GA Land Lottery as a resident of Woodruff's District, Campbell Co. (Lot 206, Dist. 28, Sect. 3, Cherokee (later Walker Co.). He also drew in the 1832 GA Gold Land Lottery (40 acres lots) - Lot 1129, Dist. 11, Sect. 1.
I checked the General Index to Estates and the only reference to Newton B. is as an heir of Joseph. If he died in Campbell, he did not have an estate.
Since there were many Bishops in Fayette Co., I checked the cemetery book, "All Known Cemeteries in Fayette County, Georgia", but did not find the 4 mentioned above.
I hope this is some help. Sorry I could not find more.-Nancy Cornell President of the Old Campbell County Historical Society

I have copies of 2 deeds between John T. Meggs, my ancestor and Joseph Bishop and his wife Patsey. The land in both cases was in Fayette County Georgia District 9, Lot 97. Some Meggs researchers figure that Patsey was the daughter of John T. Meggs. John also received 202 &1/2 acres of Land in 1842. This is recorded in Carroll County Georgia. -James E. Meggs

      Notes for J. M. STOTTS:
      Craighead County Arkansas Biographies
from The Goodspeed Publishing County 1889.
      J. M. Stotts, postmaster of Dee, and a farmer of Greenfield Township, is a native of Craighead County born December 28, 1842. His parents, Andrew J. and Mary Ann (Crowder) Stotts, were among the first settlers of Craighead County coming from Tennessee, their native State, in 1836. The father died in 1852, the mother five or six years later. These parents had nine children, five living and residents of this county: William, married to Caroline Pierce; Martha, wife of Abner Patterson; A. J. Stotts, married to Mila Ann Rickles; Thomas, married to Lena Freeman, and J. M. Stotts, the subject of this sketch. Mr. Stotts was reared in this County and received a fair common-school education, the war breaking out when he was yet a boy. When about seventeen years of age he entered the Confederate army, Thirteenth Arkansas Infantry, and served two years. On Christmas day, 1865, he was united in marriage with Sarah Ann Bishop, a daughter of Jones and Margaret (Holland) Bishop, both of whom are natives of Georgia, and came to Arkansas in the spring of 1861. The father is deceased, but the mother is still living, and is about fifty years of age. To Mr. and Mrs. Stotts were born nine children, four of whom are deceased: Abraham, Hiram, Andy J. and Mary Ann. The living are William Levi, James Warner, Sarah Ann. Marietta and Hattie. Since his marriage Mr. Stotts has been engaged in farming, and now owns a well-improved farm of fifty acres, mostly under cultivation. He was for four years a merchant of Dee, and in November, 1882, was appointed postmaster, which office he has since held. He is a member of Harrisburg Lodge No. 77, I. O. O. F., and both he and his wife are members of the Christian Valley Church.

      W. D. Kirksey, a prominent agriculturist of Jonesboro Township, is a native of Georgia, born in Monroe County twenty-five miles above Macon, February 2, 1832. He is the son of William and Martha (White) Kirksey, the former a native of Abbeville District, S. C., the latter of Virginia. The father moved to Georgia, when twenty years of age, and in the fall of 1871, when eighty years of age, he came to Craighead County Ark., with his son W. D. The mother went from Virginia to Georgia, when yet a child and died in this county in 1878, aged seventy-six or seventy-seven years. They were the parents of nine children, five of whom are living, four being residents of this county. W. D. Kirksey spent his childhood on the farm, and when twenty years of age, went into the saw-mill and lumber business, at which he was engaged for twenty years. He also spent four years in a machine shop in Atlanta. He came to Craighead County in the latter part of 1871, and purchased 300 acres of land, which with seventy-five under cultivation make a good farm. In November, 1857, he married Mary E. Bishop, a native of Georgia, and daughter of Jones and Margaret (Holland) Bishop. Mr. Bishop is dead, and his widow resides in this township with her eldest son, Joe. Ten children have been born to Mr. and Mrs. Kirksey, eight of whom are now living, viz.: Mary Jane (wife of John Stidman), W. J. (married Ella Sillman). Sarah Ann (wife of Thomas Barker), Emma Lee (wife of Willis Ironton), Andrew J., Alice, Ella and Lewis R. Mr. Kirksey is a Democrat in politics, and is active in the
promotion of educational interests. He and his wife and most of their children are members of the Missionary Baptist Church, and contribute liberally to the upbuilding of all charitable and praiseworthy enterprises.

      GEORGIA RESERVE REGIMENTS
Reserve regiments were a different category than the State Guard. The Reserve term designates a force that was raised under a specific call of the governor for 6-months' troops for Aug. 63 to Feb 64. They were full-time soldiers for the duration (from enlistment), but were limited by age (young or old) and/or infirmity to performing limited tasks: prison camp guards, local security forces, hunting deserters/draft dodgers, combatting cavalry raids, supplementing CSA regiments in their home states, etc.

iii. MARY MAGDALENE BISHOP, b. 1870, Campbell County Georgia; d. Bet. 1960 - 1970, Haralson County Georgia; m. CHARLES CALHOUN WHITAKER, Bet. 1885 - 1888, Haralson County Georgia; d. Abt. 1918.
      Notes for MARY MAGDALENE BISHOP:
Her Father was supposedly 3/4 native american. Mother said she looked like and Indian herself. Just after she married Charlie Whitaker, her parents, and her brothers(7 or 8 of them) got in a wagon and moved to Arkansas. The younger two, Tom and Lindsey came back to visit a couple of times. They both lived in St. Louis some as well. -Sonjia.FTW
The part about her father Newton being 3/4 Cherokee Indian is not correct. Newton's wife Frances is listed as a widowed white female in the 1900 Craighead County Arkansas Census -William Bishop
Maggie was said to be a full blooded Cherokee Indian but this is not proven, and not likely unless she was adopted.
      Notes for CHARLES CALHOUN WHITAKER:
Aunt Louise Helton says that when she was born they were farming on John Verner's place. When I asked where she was born, she says on Darnell Mountain on John Verner's place. Charlie as he was called later rode the train to Hopewell to work as a blacksmith. He was very good with animals. She remembered him making her a little balpeen hammer and showing her how to hammer nails.-Sonjia.FTW

      Notes for THOMAS BISHOP:
This was a Thomas who died as an infant prior to 1881. I suspect that this was a different Thomas as there is a Thomas on the 1880 census for Campbell County Georgia listed as being born August 8, 1879. Additionally, the 1900 Census shows Frances to be the mother of ten children with six still living.-William Bishop
