Good Evening Terry,My friend and I just got back the Civil War records of William A. ( his grandfather), and his brothers: Stephen and James Kirksey. They were all wounded in Ms with James Kirksey died in Ms. Our plan now is to find the battle which they werein and have this insert with their names, etc. for the family tree history. William A. Kirksey was wounded and came back to Marshall Co. Ky and married Barbaray Travis on Dec. 8, 1864. William A. Kirksey was on the 1910 census, Kentuckystarted recording death in 1911. We are still trying to locate his obit, and find the cemetery. We found his wife death, however, we cant find the cemetery where she was taken to. We think they were buried in Marshall co. Ky as Oak level was East of Paducah according to the map. That is what we need help on if anyone has information. Hope we can find him. William A. Kirksey is the son of Eaton and Prscilla Kirksey. In 1982 I visited Kirksey, Kentucky to research the name origin & I talked to the local historian. He stated that Kirksey, Kentucky was founded by Stephen F. Kirksey and he was the postmaster there for sometime.I later inquired from another source asking for information that might have been included with his postmaster position, but I found nothing more. Perhaps others in the group will have answers. Gayle Jetton

Kirksey Kentucky
In 1871 there was a farming community in Calloway County Kentucky that wanted a post office. Before this was possible they had to have a name for the community. There were several families named Reed and Rose. Reedville and Rosedale were suggested. However, Stephen Franklin Kirksey owned the community store where the post office would be located and he would be the postmaster, so he gave the Kirksey for the post office. The community decide to accept the name of Kirksey.
The post office was established on July 14, 1871. Stephen was postmaster from 7/14/1871 until 8/11/1873 when he moved away from the community.
The day we visited Kirksey and the Murray Library, I talked to Mr. Joe Pat James on the phone. Later he wrote me and gave me the above story. Mr. James lives in Murray but owns the family farm he grew up on in Kirksey. He said there are 300 to 350 people in the Kirksey community now, but no Kirkseys.
There is a service station/convenience store, a feed mill, and a Methodist Church, a Church of Christ church and a new Post Ofiice with a zip code of 42054. It is a very neat farming community about 12 miles northeast of Murray, Kentucky.
