William Jeffers, born in Chester county, Pennsylvania, in 1786, settled in Carthage township as a farmer in 1807. He has lived in the township continuously for over sixty years, and is a highly respected citizen. His oldest son, A. P. Jeffers, was born in 1810 in Carthage, where he still lives. He was for several years one of the township trustees. Two of the sons of A. P. Jeffers served in the 53rd regiment O.V.I.

R(obert) W. Jeffers, another son of William, was born in Carthage township in 1814, and still living there a respectable farmer. (History of Athens County, Ohio - Walker, F497A8W2, Ohio State University Library).
Mr. Wm. Jeffers, died at the residence of his son-in-law, David Shields, in Carthage Township, December 1, 1871, in the 85th year of his age. Mr. Jeffers was born in Pennsylvania in 1786, and removed to Carthage Township, this county, in 1807, where he has since resided, honored and esteemed by all. Thus one by one are those hardy pioneers whose severe labors have caused the wilderness to blossom as the rose, passing from our midst to meet their rewards in another and better world.
