    [LIND:]
    For the Nashville Christian Advocate.

    A VETERAN GONE.

    William Seymour, the subject of this notice, was a native of Monaghan county, Ireland. From a certificate found among his papers, it appears that he took the oath of allegiance to the United States, on the 9th of Nov., 1808. It was my privilege to become acquainted with him in the year 1827, and many have been the pleasant and profitable seasons I enjoyed in his company. His mind, naturally strong and active, had been cultivated to a considerable extent, and was stored with useful and religious knowledge. Rarely have I met a man better versed in the Scriptures, or more thoroughly acquainted with the doctrines of the Bible. He professed religion in the 16th your of his age, became a member of the M. E. Church in his native country, frequently sat under the ministry of Jno. Wesley, the father of Methodism, and for 71 years adorned the christian character by practising the duties inculcated by the sacred volume. For the last fifteen years he was without a regular home, spending his time in various families about Greensboro, Ala., with an occasional visit to his son, residing in Mississippi. Such was his piety, intelligence, and suavity of manners, that every one prized his comapny, and every family regarded it a privilege to have him in the domestic circle. He had been on a visit to his son, and was returning to Greensboro, when "the master called him home," from the residence of Bro. S. S. Webb, Sumpter Co., Ala., on the 6th of Nov. 1846, in the 87th years of his age. During his illness, he was never heard to murmur, but was perfectly resigned to the will of his maker, giving the fullest assurance that the end of the upright man is peace.

    I doubt not but Father Seymour was by far the oldest Methodist in the United States; for he was for several years a member in his native country before any such church organization existed in this country. Notwithstanding the violent opposition made to a regular system of disseminating the Gospel by an itinerant ministry, he lived to see such a system organized in our own country, and its efforts crowned with such success as to number above one million in its regular communion, within a period much less than his own membership with the Church. This single thought, in connection with the life of Father S., opens up a field for reflection in which I should like to indulge, but your repeated and earnest requests to make obituary notices as short as possible, forbid that I should do so. I would therefore close by remarking, that when Father S.'s physical energies failed so far as to render him unable to support himself, he found almost every door in the country thrown open to him, and a cordial welcome to every family circle, most clearly proving the truth of the promise, through the mouth of the prophet, which has bee thus verified:

    "Even down to old age all my people shall prove,
    My sov'reign, eternal, unchangeable love;
    And when hoary hairs shall their temples adorn,
    Like lambs they shall still in my bosom be borne."

    Yours truly,
    E. V. LEVERT.
    Greensboro, Ala., Jan. 5, 1847.
