Accompanied her husband on his last voyage to Hamburg. Released by the Germans
at the time that her husband was taken into custody (3 Aug 1914), she was
released with funds from the ship (the S.S. Heworth) hidden in her corsets.
Took in lodgers, Harold Greenhaulgh and Robert Ashworth in Spring 1919,
possibly to overcome a cash crisis resulting from the death of her husband and
the delay in being granted letters of administration of his estate until 1925.
After the death of her husband, the Foreign Office returned his personal
effects on 25 Apr 1919 and they received her reply to confirm their receipt on
5 May.
She owned shares in the Newbigin Steamship Co., Mansion House Chambers,
Quayside, Newcastle on Tyne.
Her grave may have been hit during an air raid in World War II, possibly the
one on 11 Oct 1942 which badly damaged the cemetery lodge.
