Education: She could draw and sing very well. She wishes she would have been encouraged more to pursue this talents. Bernita gave her hand-me-downs and didn't buy her the books she needed for school. She was 3 years older than the other students, except for Virgil Dobbs (he'd been sick). She was good in Art. Mr. Scherck was the Science teacher. The first day of class she drew his picture and one of the students told the teacher, hoping to get her in trouble. Mr. Scherck asked her to bring the picture to the front and when he saw it he said "Virginia, I'm going to keep this for the rest of my life. To think someone would draw me instead of a clown." In the 7th grade the principle was R. Ben Brown and her math teacher was Bert Holt. Both of these men loved God and taught from the Bible. She learned so much from Mr. Holt. He'd read a story from the Bible each day. He told the class that you don't have to buy another book because all the stories you need are in the Bible. If you love mysteries, they're in the Bible, if you like love stories they're in the Bible. She remembers hearing the stories she'd seen in the movies. She was a Junior Police (those running in the hall were reported and sent to the principle's office). Her school days were "the most wonderful years of my life." 1930 Capitol Hill Junior High, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Oklahoma 1

Note: When I was 19 months old Papa died. I’m sure I remember. I went in to where Papa was in the casket and pushed a chair up and got in with Papa. When Mama found me I was patting his face. When I told my brothers they laughed and told me it was Mama who had told me. But I still see that little girl.
