Th e TERRIOT family name was among those of the AULNAY seigniory in Poitou, living in Martaizé , dept. of Vienne, France. Massignon stated that Perrine TERRIOT was probably a sister of Jea n TERRIOT and the TERIOTs and DUPUIS were related by marriage before arriving in Acadia.
!NAME: Article from PERSI quoting Father Goulet. Spelled TERRIAU, the original Acadian immig rant from France, "born in 1601 at Martaize, Aulnay siegnory, Loudun region, Poitou province , France. The town is near La Rochelle on the Atlantic coast [sic] of France." It goes on t o say "The entire Jean TERRIOT family, including children, arrived in the New World in 1640 [ sic, the records show that all the children of this family, beginning in 1637, were likely bo rn in Acadia.]. Later, Jean's sister Perrine sailed to Canada; her husband was Martin Dupuis. .. The original spelling of Theriault was Terriot. This name means "a man of the land, such a s a gardener or farmer, as well as a hamlet."

[At the time, there were 68 families (29 5 persons) living in Port Royal, 392 [could it be 329?] persons in all of Acadia.] The famil y has 6 head of cattle and 1 sheep, with 5 arpents of workable land. Jehan is listed as "Labo ureur" or Plowman.

In an earlier paragraph, he calls him Jean TERRIA U "1er", who settled in Acadia after having married Perrine BOURG [sic]. He cites "(Coll. d e manuscrits: I/83)." In the genealogical table beginning on p. 49, he says the couple were b orn in France of unknown parents, of "Loudunois, province du Poitou." Here we have Jehan [bor n] 1601, married in France ?-Loudun around 1635 Perrine RUAU, born in 1611.

None of these depositions mentions Jean Thériot' s wife Perrine Rau, who is only known to Acadian genealogy through her appearance in the 167 1 census (see DGFA-1, pp. 1483-1484).
