    !FAMILY: Genevieve Massignon, LES PARLERS FRANCAIS D'ACADIE ; 1575-1675; vol. 1, ; pp. 37 & 49, 58. The TERRIOTs were r elated to the DUPUIS in France before their emigration to A cadia. The TERRIOT family name was among those of the AULNA Y seigniory in Poitou, living in Martaizé, dept. of Vienne , France. Massignon stated that Perrine TERRIOT was probabl y a sister of Jean TERRIOT and the TERIOTs and DUPUIS wer e related by marriage before arriving in Acadia.

Spel led TERRIAU, the original Acadian immigrant from France, "b orn in 1601 at Martaize, Aulnay siegnory, Loudun region, Po itou province, France. The town is near La Rochelle on th e Atlantic coast [sic] of France." It goes on to say "The e ntire Jean TERRIOT family, including children, arrived in t he New World in 1640 [sic, the records show that all the ch ildren of this family, beginning in 1637, were likely bor n in Acadia.]. Later, Jean's sister Perrine sailed to Canad a; her husband was Martin Dupuis... The original spelling o f Theriault was Terriot. This name means "a man of the land , such as a gardener or farmer, as well as a hamlet."

Their seven children (six of who m are married) are listed: Claude 34, Jehan 32, Bonaventur e 30 [27 on own entry], Germain 25, Jeanne 27, Catherinne 2 1, and Pierre, 16 and single. [At the time, there were 68 f amilies (295 persons) living in Port Royal, 392 [could it b e 329?] persons in all of Acadia.] The family has 6 head o f cattle and 1 sheep, with 5 arpents of workable land. Jeha n is listed as "Laboureur" or Plowman.

      Text: On the first Acadian census of 1671 we find "Jehan TERRIAU " his wife Perrine RUAU, age "soixante-dix" [sic], and thei r seven children. In an earlier paragraph, he calls him Jea n TERRIAU "1er", who settled in Acadia after having marrie d Perrine BOURG [sic]. He cites "(Coll. de manuscrits: I/83 )." In the genealogical table beginning on p. 49, he says t he couple were born in France of unknown parents, of "Loudu nois, province du Poitou." Here we have Jehan [born] 1601 , married in France ?-Loudun around 1635 Perrine RUAU, bor n in 1611.

      Text: THÉRIOT, Jean, came from France, according to three deposit ions: one from Marie-Josèphe Dupuis, widow of his great-gra ndson PierreThériot (Doc. inéd., Vol. III, p. 127), and tw o others from the second husbands of the widows of that sam e Pierre's brothers Cyprien (ibid., Vol. II, p. 181) and Si mon-Joseph (ibid., p. 193). None of these depositions menti ons Jean Thériot's wife Perrine Rau, who is only known to A cadian genealogy through her appearance in the 1671 censu s (see DGFA-1, pp. 1483-1484).
