Th e TERRIOT family name was among those of the AULNAY seigniory in Poitou, living in Martaizé , dept. of Vienne, France. The town is near La Rochelle on the Atlantic coast [sic] of France." It goes on t o say "The entire Jean TERRIOT family, including children, arrived in the New World in 1640 [ sic, the records show that all the children of this family, beginning in 1637, were likely bo rn in Acadia.]. Later, Jean's sister Perrine sailed to Canada; her husband was Martin Dupuis. .. The original spelling of Theriault was Terriot. This name means "a man of the land, such a s a gardener or farmer, as well as a hamlet."

!RESIDENCE: LIPPINCOTT'S NEW GAZETTEER; 1911 ed.; p. 1061. Loudun, a town of France, in Vienn e, 33 NNW of Poitiers.: "It is a quaint little town with interesting churches, the keep o f a mediaeval castle, and some remains of the old fortifications. There are manufactures of l ace and passementerie [trimmings]. Pop. in 1901, 3909 (commune, 4615)."

Their seven children (six of whom a re married) are listed: Claude 34, Jehan 32, Bonaventure 30 [27 on own entry], Germain 25, Je anne 27, Catherinne 21, and Pierre, 16 and single. [At the time, there were 68 families (29 5 persons) living in Port Royal, 392 [could it be 329?] persons in all of Acadia.] The famil y has 6 head of cattle and 1 sheep, with 5 arpents of workable land. Jehan is listed as "Labo ureur" or Plowman.

!CENSUS-DEATH: Neither Jean nor his wife Perrine appear on the 1678 census of Port Royal, Aca dia.

!CENSUS: 1686, Port Royal, Acadia, no listing for Jean. A Perrine BOURC, listed as "Mere," i s living with this family's granddaughter Marguerite TERIO & her husband Claude LANDRY. [Thi s is the Perrine BOURG, mother to Claude LANDRY. This is likely where the confusion over Jean 's wife's surname began. Both Jean TERRIAU and his wife were probably deceased.]
