    GILBERT, (DE UMFRAVILLE), EARL OF ANGUS [SCT] and LORD KYME, son and heir of Robert, EARL OF ANGUS, by Lucy, daughter and in her issue heir of Philip, LORD KYME, succeeded his father as Earl of Angus in 1325, and his uncle, William, Lord Kyme, as Lord Kymc in 1338. He died s.p.s., 6 January 1380/1. See fuller particulars sub ANGUS. At his-death the Barony of Kyme descended to the representative of his only sister of the whole blood, Elizabeth.     EARLDOM OF ANGUS [ENG] (III) 1325 to 1381

    Lord Umfreville [ENG]; 1st son by 1st wife, aged 15 at father's death; did homage and had livery of his father's lands 6 July 133, and also of those of his grandmother, Elizabeth, Countess of Angus; was one of the disinherited Barons who invaded Scotland in 1332, and assisted in the victory of Edward Balliol at Dupplin Muir 11 August 1332. In 1338 he succeeded de jure (according to modern doctrine) to the Barony of Kyme on the death sp. of his maternal uncle William, 2nd Lord Kyme. One of the Commanders at the Battle of Nevill's Cross 17 October 1346 where the King of Scots was taken prisoner, for whose redemption he was appointed a Commissioner 18 June 1354; appointed a warden of the Marches 28 May and 15 July 1352 &c.; summoned to Parliament 27 January 1331/2 to 26 August 1380 by writs directed Gilberto de Umframvill comiti Danegos/Anegos; died s.p.s.

    He m. 1stly, Joan, daughter of Sir Robert Willoughby (1st Lord Willoughby), by Margaret, daughter of Sir Edmund Deincourt (1st Lord Deincourt). She d. 16 Jul 1350. He m. 2ndly, before Oct 1369, Maud, only daughter of Sir Thomas Lucy (2nd Lord Lucy), by Margaret, 3rd daughter and eventually coheir of Sir Thomas Multon (1st Lord Multon). He dsps. 6 Jan 1380/1. His widow, who had become sole heir of her family, 30 Sep 1369, possessed, as a life tenant, the greater part of his property after his death. She m. before 3 Oct 1383, as 2nd wife, Henry Percy, 1st Earl of Northumberland, and dsp. 18 Dec 1398. The Earl, her 2nd husband, on whom and whose family she had entailed her paternal inheritance to the exclusion of her heir at law, and who also possessed Prudhoe, etc., after her death by virtue of an entail made by her 1st husband, 16 Aug 1375, was slain, 20 Feb 1407/8, at Bramham Moor.     After the death of Gilbert, Earl of Angus, 6 Jan 1380/1 (a), none of the descendants of his grandfather, Earl Gilbert, the first to be summoned to Parliament, were summoned under the title of Earl of Angus or that of Lord Umfreville. [Complete Peerage I:151, XIV:25]

    (a) His heir at law was his niece Alienor, de jure (according to modern doctrine), Baroness Kyme, then aged 40 and widow of Sir Henry Tailboys, she being daughter of Elizabeth (the Earl's only sister of the whole blood who left issue), by Sir Gilbert Borrowdon. Her grandson, Walter Tailboys, de jure 6th Lord Kyme, inherited Harbottle, Otterburn, Kyme, etc., on the death of Sir Robert de Umfreville, KG, 27 Jan 1436/7.
