-------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- THE HISTORIC PAST OF WASHINGTON MASON COUNTY KENTUCKY
BY
EDNA HUNTER BEST
Washington had many taverns in the town during the first part of the nineteenth century, perhaps not so many in the 1830's and 1840's
82
when taverns were at the peak of their popular- ity and usefulness.
The tavern of Stephen Treacle was a very early one, and gained fame because it had the honor of entertaining Aaron Burr ; it was located near Kenton's Line on West Main Street. In one of the spacious old rooms, Aaron Burr, with all the power power of persuasive tongue and fascinating personality, held his hearers spellbound as he told them of his fabulous schemes and dreams of an empire. None of them materialized and only brought disgrace and ruin to a brilliant man whose potential greatness seemed to have been warped from the beginning. Stephen Treacle was one of the trustees of Washington in 1800. How long his tavern existed is not known.

Military Service
Westmoreland County (PA) Frontier Rangers by Paul W. Myers
When nearly daily border depredations by Indians began in 1777, many young men chose to join small ranging companies in preference to the militia or to entering the regular service. These ranging companies were composed of men who lived closest to each ranger captain. During the years 1778-1783 the following men were a few of the most prominent captains in the ranging service: James Guthrje, Thomas Stokely, Matthew Jack, Michael Huffnagle, James Smith, Joseph Erwin, William Cooper, Samuel Shannon, Samuel Brady, Van Swearingen, _____ Wallace, the Barrs, Col. Wilson, the Brownlees, and the Shaws. The men moved about Westmoreland County in small parties, generally under a single officer, seeking out rnaurading bands of Indian warriors who were conducting forays south and east of the Allegheny River. Rangers dressed in homespun, and carried their own rifles, knives, and hatchets. They could be characterized as "minute men of the frontier," always ready to hasten together for a mission when an alarm was given. It was their duty to alert settlers when an attack had been made, or was anticipated, and they were obliged to escort women and children to a place of safety. As the conflict continued, these men continued, these men became so expert in this manner of warfare that their natural senses became so highly developed that they could travel by night like an animal and could distinguish sounds of danger which were unheard by others. They could endure lack of food and long forced marches, becoming agile and swift of foot, as well as deadly with their weapons. ....... It is believed that the researchers who prepared the lists of rangers for publication in the Pennsylvania Archives during the last century were able to distinguish from extant records those individuals who, prior to 1781, lived in
95
what was to become Washington County, west of the Monongahela River. Washington County has a list of 1,600 rangers to her credit as well.

From the Pennsylvania Archives:
The Pennsylvania Militia, 1777-1783: "Pay for military service was often long delayed. Thousands of militiamen returned from tours of active duty unpaid, bearing only a slip signed by a commanding officer. General financial confusion and the collapse of wartime currencies made prompt payment impossible, but eventually, under an act of April 1, 1784, Pennsylvania compensated such payment for their active service and settled accounts with certain other public creditors by passing to them interesting bearing Certificates of the funded or Militia Debt. These certificates (bonds in the modern sense) were ultimately redeemed at face value. Unfortunately, when redemption came many of the original holders had long since sold their certificates at heavy discounts."
Revolutionary War Military Abstract Card File Indexes-{series #13.50}: Some cards show a certificate number that relates to the Militia Loan of 1784-1785. This loan was established to pay individuals for services and goods provided during the Revolutionary War that had not been reimbursed at that time. Note that not all certificate numbers give additional information.
