ID: I914
Name: Ezekiel Gardner
Sex: M
Birth: 01 Jul 1753 in Hingham, Massachusetts
Death: 18 Apr 1828 in Bedford, New Hampshire
Occupation: Shoemaker
Change Date: 21 Apr 2008
Note: The History of Hingham has Ezekiel's birthdate, as well as information on the rest of the line going back to the immigrant John Gardner.
Ezekiel served in the Revolutionary War from 1775 to 1779 and was a Sergeant when he was discharged. He and his wife moved to Bedford shortly thereafter.
1790 Bedford census for Ezekiel Gardner has 1 M 16+, 3 M 0-15, 4 F. So he already had 3 sons and 3 daughters (this matches totals for 10-15 and 16-25 categories in 1800 census, following).
1800 Bedford census for Ezekiel Gadner (sic) has 2 M 0-9, 2 M 10-15, 1 M 16-25, 0 M 26-44, 1 M 45+, 1 F 0-9, 1 F 10-15, 2 F 16-25, 0 F 26-44, 1 F 45+. If these are all his children, he has 5 sons and 4 daughters.
His 1818 application for pension had an inventory which included "Shoemaker tools".
His pension file has an affadavit dated April 4, 1837, from Betsey Gardner, of Bedford, which says: "... That she is the widow of Ezekiel Gardner late of said Bedford, Deceased, that she was married to the said Ezekiel on the second day of November, A.D. 1775 at which time my said husband was in the "eight months service" so called, he being at the time absent from duty on furlough. We were married at Abington, Massachusetts, by Samuel Norton, Esq., our minister, the Rev. Samuel Niles, being absent at Rhode Island on some service in relation to the Army. I futher testify that my said husband died suddenly at Bedford aforesaid on Friday, the 18th day of April A.D. 1828 and that I have remained his widow ever since. ..."
Sons Richard C. and Pharis also filed affadavits supporting their mother's request for a widow's pension.
Ezekiel is buried in the Joppa Cemetery, near Bedford.
The Bedford town records do not record the births of any of Ezekiel's children, which would have been born from about 1778 to about 1805. There were two other Gardner families on the Bedford tax rolls in the 1770's through the 1790's, both of whom had the births of their children recorded in the town records.
One was Amos Gardner, whose children with wife Phebe were Sarah b. 1774, Amos b. 1775, Molly b. 1777, Jacob b. 1779, Laban b. 1781, Betty b. 1783, John b. 1785, Phebe b. 1789, Hulda b. 1791, Samuel b. 1794.
The other was John Gardner, whose children with wife Margaret (aka Peggy) were Sally b. 1775, Peggy b. 1777, Mary b. 1779.
There are numerous marriages for persons with a Gardner surname from 1800 to 1820, which is when Ezekiel's children would be getting married. Here are the dates and names of marriages (with my comments):
08 Oct 1805 - Rachel Smith Gardner + Moses B. Merrick (VERY PROBABLE child of Ezekiel - his mother was Rachel Smith - this might be an early child born about 1785). 22 Nov 1809 - Huldah Gardner + Abel Beard, Jr. (probable child of Amos, b. 1791). 25 Dec 1815 - Aaron Gardner + Margaret Kavanaugh (possible child of Ezekiel). 20 Oct 1816 - Mary Gardner + Christopher Buiderbush of Merrimack (possible child of Ezekiel). 25 Dec 1816 - Hannah Gardner + Reuel G. Manning (PROBABLE child of Ezekiel - his wife's mother's name was Hannah and he had a sister, Hannah). 30 Sep 1817 - Phadres Gardner + Mary G. Swett (DEFINITE child of Ezekiel - in pension record). 03 Dec 1818 - Caswell Gardner + Anna Bryant (PROBABLE child of Ezekiel - same name as his brother). (Since I was looking for Adam's marriage, I didn't search for or record marriages after 1819...)
See Notes for son, Adam Gardner, for why I think that Ezekiel Gardner is his father.
