10 Jul 1796 St. Nicolaas Catholic church (in Maastricht) marriage record (in latin) for "Carolus Josephus Defrance" and "Maria Catharina Gerardu".
The birth of their first child in 1797 was recorded in Maastricht, but then there is an eleven year gap to the birth of the next child recorded in Maastricht in 1808. Joseph was in the French army at the time and may have been posted elsewhere with his wife and family, but I don't know where.
1835 Maastricht, Limburg marriage record for son Charles gives death date and place as 27 Jan 1832 in Givet, Frankrijk (Dutch for France).
1832 death record in Givet, Ardennes, France, gives date of death as 27 Jan 1832, and baptismal date of 22 Aug 1772 in Auxerre, Yonne, but no precise birthdate nor names of parents. The death record says that he was domiciled in Givet, Fort de Rome, house number 2, corporal enjoying a military pension of 170 francs, registered under the number 124867, husband of Marie Catherine Gerardu, currently living in Givet. Declarants were Jacques Joseph Harroy, age 51, master shoe-maker, and Antoine Campette, age 23, shoemaker, both of Givet.

There is a large gap in the births of their children (1798 - 1808). Unless Charles Joseph was a prisoner somewhere, it's unlikely that there were no children born during this time.
A very help Dutch correspondent, Jan A. de Keijzer in Maastricht, whose wife is a Gerardu descendant (and thus a distant cousin) wrote this about the military hospital in Maastricht:
"On Tafelstraat (read Tablestreet) there is a Militair Hospital all many years before Napoleon with his armee was here. It was all a hospital during the 80 years war from 1568 to 1648 from the Spanish Duke of Alva a Catholic man again the Lutheran monarch of Holland named Willem van Oranje the ancestor of our Queen. Before this time it had been built as a nunshouse for nuns from Belgium. They came to Maastricht to help with people sick with cholera and typhus. I found a letter in a book in the archive and it's sure that this building was used for the soldiers of Napoleon and that the wives of his soldiers went to this place for the birth of the children."
So maybe the births of the soldiers' children born in that hospital were not recorded in the civil records... Or maybe he was stationed in Givet during that time...
