  • ID: I460
  • Name: Hendrina Maria Johanna Bongers
  • Sex: F
  • Birth: 03 May 1852 in Arnhem, Gelderland, Neth.
  • Death: 11 Mar 1942 in Los Angeles, California
  • Immigration: 1875 Oconto, Wisconsin
  • Change Date: 26 Dec 2007
  • Note:
1852 Arnhem birth record #250 for Hendrina Maria Johanna Bongers, b. 03 May 1852.

Arrived with husband and first child aboard SS W.A. Scholten on April 22, 1875. Also aboard were her sister, Elizabeth Bongers De France, and the four De France children.

1880 census for Oconto, Oconto county, Wisconsin, page 339B: Frank Bourboom (sic), head, age 33, works in saw mill; Anna, age 25, keeps house; John, age 6, attends school; Martin, age 4; Cordina, age 8M. Everyone born in Bohemia and parents born in Bohemia (which is very obviously wrong).

The name of "Martin" is incorrect. Baptismal record and other census records use Mathew.

1885 Wisconsin State Census, 20 June 1885, City of Oconto, Oconto, WI has Frank Bourbom, 5 males, 1 female, 3 born in US, 3 born in Holland. Therefore, Cordina has died, and 4 sons - John, Mathew, Henry and Frank - are living.

1900 census for Knife Falls, Carlton county, Minnesota, Jun 13, E.D. 42, sheet 11, line 9: Chas Hannakamp, head, b. Jun 1850 in Holland, imm. 1880, butcher, m. 11 years; "Annie"?, wife, b. May 1852 in Holland, imm. 1875, 11 children, 6 living; Frank, son, b. Dec 1883; Peter, son, b. Sep 1885; Lizzie, b. Jul 1887. All three children born in Wisconsin, parents both born in Holland.

Since this marriage occurred 11 years ago in 1888-89, these three children are from a previous marriage. Lizzie's SS-5 form identified her father as Frank Boerboon, so presumably, these are all Frank's children (small possibility that one or more is a child of Charles from a previous marriage, but unlikely).

Hendrina says six children were still alive in 1900. John, Mathew and Henry have their own 1900 census entries, so those are the 3 others besides Frank, Peter and Lizzie listed above.

A picture taken about 1908 in the possession of Beth Sorge shows Hendrina and four adult sons and a young adult woman, so one child alive in 1900 is missing from the picture. The woman is Lizzie. Four sons were still alive in 1920 - John, Mathew, Henry and Frank. But by 1910 Mathew was in California, so he might be the one missing - thus the other son could be Peter.

1914/1915 Minneapolis City Directory lists Henderiena Hanecamp, widow of Charles H., living with Joseph W. Mashek family (her daughter, Elizabeth, is Joseph's wife).

Around 1915 or 1916, she married John Miller, who was apparently living at "the Soldier's Home".

1920 Minneapolis census of Jan 12 lists Hendenora M. Miller, age 69, born Holland, both parents born Holland. Son Mathies J., age 42, born Wisconsin, both parents born Holland. (But I am not so sure of this - since there was no separate surname for Mathies, he should be Mathies Miller. A Mathies A. Miller died in 1955 (born 1874). In the 1880 census a John MULLER family has a son Matthias age 6 - so this could be him).

1920 Minneapolis census lists Joseph W. Mashek with wife, Elizabeth, age 32, born Wisconsin, both parents born Holland.

Death record found in RootsWeb California Death Index.
Actual California death certificate (#3967 vol. 431) says:
Born May 3, 1851 (sic) in Holland
Died March 11, 1942 at home at 4042 Collis, in Los Angeles
Lived in U.S. 69 years [so she immigrated about 1873, but 1900 census says 1875]
        Widow of John Miller
Informant Mrs. Elizabeth Mashek, Minneapolis, Minn.
Burial 18 Mar 1942 in Calvary Cemetery
