  • Sex: F
  • Birth: 04 Dec 1832 in Oss, Noord-Brabant, Neth.

  • Burial: 01 Feb 1913 Oconto, Wisconsin
  • Immigration: 1864 Oconto, Wisconsin
  • Change Date: 22 Oct 2006
  • Note:
Birth certificate #74 for 1832 in Oss for "Hermina Schuurmans".

1900 Oconto census for "Van Ussen, Hermina" says birth is Nov 1831 (Hermina is her correct given name - this is the only time it is used in the U.S. records). Ages in 1880, 1900, and 1910 census were _8 and this would be correct for a birthday late in 1831. Her Oconto death certificate says birth is 04 Dec 1832, which matches the real thing in the Netherlands.

1900 Oconto census also says she had 4 children, 1 of whom was still living (that would be John). See note for husband Cornelis Van Ussen for more census details.

The 1870 census for Oconto, East Ward, has Wesesn (sic), Cornelius (32) [s.b. 30], and his wife Helen (36) [s.b. Hermina (38)] with children Anna (4) and John (3). Next in the census is the family of Vanoble [s.b. Van Abel], Peter (30), and his wife Lesena (23). Living with that family are Schurman, Jarad (40) and Schurman, Adrian (39), both males. The census had no column for relationship to head, but these Schurmans may have been brothers of their neighbor, Willemina Van Essen, and also possibly brothers of Mrs. Van Abel. The 1880 census has Peter as age 44 and his wife (now named Christine) as age 40. So she was really age 30 in the 1870 census, putting her within reasonable age range of her putative brothers (39 and 40) and her sister (38).

St. Joseph's Church, Oconto, has a death record for "Wilhelmina Van Ussen nata Schuurman" with date of death as 30 Jan 1913.

Minnie was the godmother of one of the Van Abel's children, Maria Jacoba (also known as Minnie) who was baptized 03 Dec 1869 (St. Joseph's baptismal record).

Godparents to son John were Mr. and Mrs. Peter Van Abel, and godfather to daughter Anna was Gerard Schuurman (also from St. Joseph's baptismal records). This is probably the "Jarad" Schurman in the 1870 census.

In the obituary for Mrs. Peter Van Abel in the Oconto County Reporter on April 28, 1910, Mrs. Cornelius Van Ussen was a surviving sister(!!). No surviving brothers were listed (Gerardt died in 1898). Her Oconto county death record info was provide by her husband, Peter, and gave her name as Nicolasina Van Abel, with her parents listed as John Schuurmans and Mary Jegear. So these are Minnie's parents, too! The obituary for Peter said (incorrectly as it turns out) that he was born in Oss, Holland, so that's my guess for now for Minnie's birthplace (which turns out to be correct!).
