Transcription: Im Jahr eintausand achthundert vier und vierzig den zwölften Jänner frühe sieben Uhr wurde dahier geboren und nachmittags zwei Uhr in der Pfarrkirche getauft Meinrad unehlicher Sohn der ledigen Sophia Bernauer, ehliche Tochter des Thaddäus Bernauer und der Maria Josepha Widler von hier. Zeugen sind: Sylverins Haag, lediger und großjähriger Bürgerssohn (Pathe) und Blasius Kunz, Sigräst von hier. Pathin: Albina etzinger, ledige Bürgerstochter von hier.
Translation: In the year one thousand eight hundred forty-four on the twelfth of January at seven o'clock in the morning was born hereabouts and baptized in the parish church in the afternoon at two o'clock Meinrad, illegitimate son of the unmarried Sophia Bernauer, legitimate daughter of Thaddäus Bernauer and Maria Josepha Widler from here. Witnesses are: Sylverins Haag, unmarried and of-age citizen's son (godfather) and Blasius Kunz, sexton from here. Godmother: Albina Wetzinger, unmarried citizen's daughter from here.

1909 obituary of wife, Sophia, makes no mention of him at all. ???
1910 Long Prairie census - age 68, lodger in the home of Joseph Otto, laborer at odd jobs, born in Germany, father born in Germany, mother born in *France* (but his mother's obit said she was born in Baden, Germany), immigrated in 1850 (but that was when he arrived in Canada), naturalized (possibly in Michigan?).
1918 WWI Draft Registration record for son Thomas shows Maynard is his closest relative and lives with him.
1920 Salem, Marion, Oregon census on Jan 7 (Oregon State Insane Asylum): Back, Maynard, inmate, age 60, widowed, b. Germany, f/m both b. Germany.
(The age is wrong, but Salem is only 50 miles from Vancouver, and he is not living with Thomas or any of his other children in the 1920 censuses.)

Date of birth: 1859 (sic - way off - s.b. 1845). Occupation: Carpenter. Birthplace (city or town): Baden (State or country) Germany. Name of father: Thomas Back, born in Germany.
