NARA records (soldiers certificate #93954) - Enlisted 07 May 1861 in Waterbury. Was Sargent in Company D, 2nd Regiment Vt Volunteers. Given medical discharge 05 Feb 1863, after coming down with "Camp Fever" (chronic diarrhea) at Yorktown, Va. around June of 1862. In discharge papers, his age was given (incorrectly) as 32. He died 11 Oct 1863 of chronic diarrhea.
His first wife (Almira Lee) died in 1860, and he left a minor child - Helen - who received a minor's pension until 1872 when she turned 16. Tilton had remarried to Clara Cunningham 02 Sep 1860. In the 1860 census, Clara was a 20-year-old 'domestic' in the home of Charles Lee (probably the brother of his first wife Almira Lee), where Tilton was living with Helen. Clara abandoned Tilton and moved out of the state six months before his death. Almira's father, Jonathan Lee, became Helen's guardian.
Minor's pension papers have affadavit that Tilton and Almira were married 20 May 1854.
