ID: I249
Name: Adam D. Gardner
Sex: M
Birth: Sep 1789 in Bedford, New Hampshire
Death: 06 Jun 1865 in Bartlett, New Hampshire
Occupation: Shoemaker
Change Date: 04 Feb 2009
Note: There are no New Hampshire vital records for Adam's birth, marriage, or death.
Bartlett town records list the tax rolls each year, and the first Gardner that shows up is an Adam D. Gardner in 1816. In 1840, a Joseph Gardner shows up as an owner of 40 acres of undeveloped land worth $50, while Adam owned a house and shed worth $12 combined and a cow worth $16.
1830 census for Bartlett shows Adam Gardner's family surrounded by Pitman families (his wife's brothers) and Chubbuck families (his cousins - sons of uncle Levi).
1850 census for Bartlett shows Adam age 60, born in N.H.
Buried in Intervale Cemetery, Lower Bartlett, NH. Gravestone days died June 6, 1865, age 75y 9m. 1865-6-6 minus 75-9-0 = 1789-09-06.
As mentioned, there is no New Hampshire birth record for Adam. However, I firmly believe that he is the son of Ezekiel Gardner and Betsey Chubbuck. They married in Abington, MA, in 1775, and settled in Bedford, NH, after Ezekiel finished his Revolutionary War service in 1779. Sadly, there are no birth records for any of Ezekiel's children in the Bedford town records, and the local church was not yet a permanent fixture with its own records.
Here are the various 'coincidences' supporting this theory:
(1) The 1800 Bedford census for Ezekiel Gadner(sic) has 2 males under 10; 2 males of 10 and under 16 (Adam's age group); 1 male of 16 and under 26; and 1 male 45 and over (Ezekiel).
(2) Ezekiel had a son, Ezekiel Jr., born about 1780. Ezekiel, Jr., had a son named Adam Dickey Gardner (Adam Dickey was a prominent resident of Bedford - no known connection). Ezekiel, Jr., could have named his son after his brother (perhaps the D. in Adam D. is also Dickey?).
(3) In the book "The descendents of Jacob Schoff", Amanda Malvina Schoff (b. about 1824 in Brunswick, VT) married an Ezekiel Gardner about 1847 in Bartlett, NH. The only Gardners in Bartlett in the 1840's were members of Adam's family. So Ezekiel would be Adam's son, named after Adam's father.
(4) Ezekiel was a shoemaker (source: pension records). So was his son, Adam (source: 1850 census). Adam probably learned the trade from his father.
(5) Levi Chubbuck (Betsey's brother) was on the Bedford tax rolls in 1781 and 1782 (this is probably where he met and married his wife, Mary). He next showed up in the 1790 Bartlett census and lived there the rest of his life. So when Adam reached adulthood, he could have been persuaded by his uncle Levi to move to Bartlett - perhaps Levi wrote and said "we need a shoemaker up here in Bartlett, and there's this cute Rebecca Pitman that I'd like you to meet".
(6) Adam's last child, Levi C. Gardner, was born a scant 8 months after the death of Levi Chubbuck, and was likely named after Adam's (probably beloved) uncle. Maybe the "C." stands for Chubbuck?
(7) Adam's maternal grandmother was Hannah Marble (wife of Jonathan Chubbuck). In the 1860 census for Jackson, NH (a few miles from Lower Bartlett), there is a Hannah Gardner, age 44, seamstress, in the household of Joseph Towle, age 46. Hannah could be Adam's daughter born about 1815, and never married.
So - there you have my evidence in support of Adam's parentage.
Here are my notes on Adam and Rebecca's children, based on the 1830 census and other sources:
__ Xxx 1813 : child #1 born (dau age 15-19 in 1830 census) __ Xxx 1815 : child #2 born (dau age 15-19 in 1830 census) possibly Hannah? __ Xxx 1818 : child #3 born (son age 10-14 in 1830 census) Joseph P. (age 32 in 1850) __ Xxx 1820 : child #4 born (dau age 10-14 in 1830 census) __ Xxx 1822 : child #5 born (son age 5-9 NOT in census) Ezekiel 27 Dec 1824 : child #6 born (son age 5-9 in 1830 census) Stephen C. 26 Nov 1826 : child #7 born (son age 0-4 in 1830 census) James K. __ Xxx 1830 : child #8 born (dau age 0-4 in 1830 census) Mary P. 03 Aug 1832 : child #9 born (son born after the 1830 census) Levi C.
An Ezekiel Gardner married Amanda Schoff in Bartlett about 1847 (according to the book "The descendents of Jacob Schoff"). The only Gardners in Bartlett at that time were members of Adam's family, so this has to be Adam's son, named after Adam's father. But I've used up all of the sons of Adam in the 1830 census (I'm eventually going to look at the 1840 census) - perhaps the unknown daughter in the same age bracket was really a son?
Ezekiel died in Brunswick, Essex County, Vermont, on 12 Mar 1892 at age 65, which puts his birth in 1827 (unfortunately). Since Ezekiel is named after Adam's father, I would have expected him to have been born after Joseph and before Stephen, say in 1822. I'm hoping the age in the death record is in error and he was really 69. His wife died on 28 Feb 1900 at age 76, which puts her birth in 1824 - another reason to suspect that Ezekiel was born earlier.
1870 census for Brunswick, Essex County, Vermont - Ezekiel is age 47 (so born circa 1822-1823 Yeay!) and Amanda is age 44 (so born circa 1825-1826).
