DIED SUDDENLY     IN THE YARDS
James B. Gardner, of 503 Northeast     Second Avenue, Died of Heart         Disease This Morning
WAS LAMPTENDER MANY YEARS
Leaves Sons in the Railway Service     and Serving in the American         Navy at Cuba
Death suddenly claimed James B. Gardner, aged 61, lampman of the Northern Pacific railway, while he was at work in the yards this morning. He had been in the hospital some time and was recently discharged and was cautioned not to exert himself, as his heart was weak.     He rested on his sled near the Broadway crossing and Peter Wolvert, one of the switchmen, noticed he was ill and took him to the shanty of the flagman. Wolvert got a glass of water from the lumber yard near by and gave it to him. The Northwestern hospital was notified.     Mr. Gardner was helped on an automobile, but passed away before it started. His home was at 503 Northeast Second avenue. Mr. Gardner was well liked by employees and associates. He had worked for the Northern Pacific railway ten years.     He leaves a wife, Mrs. Carrie Gardner, and seven children who are Mrs. James Kramer of Little Pine; Ernest Gardner, a section foreman at Maltby, Wash.; Leon Gardner, a switchman in the Brainerd yards; Bert Gardner, a section foreman at Walker; Edward and Arthur Gardner, with the United States navy, stationed at Cuba; Miss Gladys Gardner of Brainerd.     Two sisters are Mrs. Kate Follett of Armstrong, Iowa, and Mrs. Mose Gray of Bridgeport, Conn. An uncle, Levi Gardner, resides at Crow Wing. He was a member of the Presbyterian church. No funeral arrangements can be made until all relatives are communicated with.

Cemetery death record says b. 05 Jan 1854, so his age should have been 62, not 61. 1854 is also used by his father, James K. Gardner, in his Civil War Pension application.
