How about THAT for editorializing!!
Emigrated from Dziekanstwo, near Opole, Silesia, Poland (Prussia) in 1869 (daughter Mary's obit said she was born in Opole, and wife Rosalie and son Joseph in 1900 census had year of arrivial in U.S. as 1869).
Buried in Long Prairie Catholic cemetery. Grave marker has 1815 - 1888, but church burial records have death date of 17 Aug 1890 at age 70 years, 2 months (i.e. born Jun 1820), and Todd county records had age as 70-2-15, so specific birth date would be 02 Jun 1820. But this conflicts with the Polish baptismal record, which I will use as the primary source.
"Todd County Histories", p. 297, says that he was one of the first Polish settlers in Todd County.
"Todd County Histories", p. 90, suggests original surname spelling was Weszala.
A Polish acquaintance of mine (Magdalena Wojtczek) says it was probably Wieszala and that the lower case "L" was proabably the Polish lower case "L" with a slash through it (pronounced as a "w"). Also, the Polish "w" is pronounced with a "v" sound, and "sz" is prounounced with a "sh" sound, so the Wieszal/a name would have been pronounced "veh SHAH wah". Catholic church records from Proszkow include people with the surname Wieszala with the slash through the "L", exactly as predicted, so this is probably correct.
