Name: Christina Petersdotter | Peterson
Sex: F
Birth: 07 Mar 1819 in Tävelsås, Kronoberg, Swed.
Death: 04 Jul 1883 in Brainerd, Minnesota
Burial: 07 Jul 1883 Brainerd, Minnesota
Immigration: 1877 Brainerd, Minnesota
Change Date: 02 Jun 2009
Note: Buried in the Eckholm family plot in Evergreen Cemetery. Emma Ryden Eckholm was her daughter. The supplementary page of notes in the Eckholm file written by Ruby Eckholm Hanson around 1944 has:
  4. Kristine Ryden born 1820 age: 63 yrs. died - July 4, 1883         Maiden name was Kristine Peterson. She was the widow of Sven Ryden, who died in         Sweden, and she was the mother of Emma Ryden Eckholm...
County death record is somewhat messed up - wrong name and entered as a male...   Date: July 4, 1883   Name: Christian Roidan   Age: 63   Arrival in Minnesota: June 29, 1867   Parents: Petersen from Sweden (notice -sen, not -son)
The Arrival year should be 1877, not 1867 - she and Emma came directly to Brainerd.
The 1880 census shows her living with the Adam Bellmuth family along with daughter Emma.
No obituary is available - the microfilms do not have complete coverage and one of the periods with missing issues spans July, 1883.
John and Mary Rhodes (brother and sister) and I connected via the Crow Wing County message board at Rootsweb in February 1999. They were searching for a 'cousin' connection between children of Johanna and their grandmother. It turned out that their grandmother's mother, Maria, was a heretofore unknown (to me) child of Christina. Maria died in 1880 after giving birth, and John and Mary knew nothing about her ancestry.
After I gave John and Mary additional info about Christina, Johanna, and Emma, they submitted that information to Jill Seaholm, a researcher at Augustana University's Swenson Swedish Research Library, who found their home parish in Sweden in the village of Östra Torsås in Kronoberg county in Småland province, Sweden.

The birthdate for Christina in AI:15&16 is wrong. In Volume AI:11, the month is a big blot, and in Volume AI:10, the day number has a stray mark in front of the "7", which is not a "1" but might have been interpreted as such. Clearly, the basic information was just copied from one volume to the next, and in this case, two errors crept in - the day change from "7" in AI:10 to "17" in AI:11, and the month changed from "3" in AI:10 to a blot in AI:11 to a "1" in AI:12.
Volume CI:2 Tävelsås BMD 1795-1853 page 77 (GID 853.16.83100): Christina, daughter of Petter Jaensson and Kjerstin Månsdotter, was born March 7, 1819.
Christina and Emma are found on the passenger list for the "Brittanic", which arrived July 16, 1877 in New York from Liverpool, England and Queenstown, Ireland. They were first on the list.

1. Christina Thor [sic], 55, Wife, of Germany [sic], going to U.S. 2. Emma Thor [sic], 18, Spinster, of Germany [sic], going to U.S.
The surname and country of residence are both wrong, but this is clearly them, after having left their parish on June 21, 1877 and arriving at New York almost a month later.
Their usage of the Thor surname was interesting. Thor was the "soldier" name used by the father of Christina's husband (and Emma's grandfather), Sven Olofsson (as I later found out when researching the family in the Swedish church records).
USE OF THE RYDEN SURNAME =========================
The Ryden surname does not appear at all in the Swedish Church Records. It was used by family members that came to America. The Swedish version of the Americanized Ryden is Rydén (pronounced like rehDEEN). The 1885 census of Duluth, Minnesota, page 66, family 527, has Swen Rydén (with an obvious accent mark, but the Ancestry.Com index has the surname as Rydin) and wife Mathilda and daughter Ethel.
Daughter Maria was the first to come to America, but since she was already married, her maiden name never came into play.
Son Swen left for America in Aug 1871, and was using Ryden in the 1885 census.
Daughter Johanna left for America in Oct 1871, and used the name "Ruden" (possibly mis-written) in her 18 Oct 1873 marriage license. So the alternate surname was already in use by then.
Christina and daughter Emma left for America in June 1877 and appeared in the 1880 census of the Adam Bellmuth family with the surname Redeen (a phonetic spelling of the Swedish pronunciation).
The father of Christina's children was Daniel Svensson, not Swan Rydén as claimed in various records. John Rhodes (descended through Maria) has proposed that late in life, Daniel Svensson became a soldier for the village, and since the custom was for soldiers to choose a new non-patronymic name, he chose Rydén. But it doesn't explain why the first name was changed.
This Rydén surname continues to be a mystery.
