John was liberally educated in the schools of Pennsylvania and New Jersey, and when he attained his majority, left home and fitted himself for his life-work by the study of architecture. He was prominent in the municipal affairs of Newark, served on
the City Council, but turned down nominations for the Assembly and other offices stating he wished to devote his whole time to his profession (Ely Genealogy, op cit, pp 404-5).
