Note: John was liberally educated in the schools of Pennsylvania and New Jersey, and when he attained his majority, left home and fitted himself for his life-work by the study of architecture. He was prominent in the municipal affairs of Newark, served on the City Council, but turned down nominations for the Assembly and other offices stating he wished to devote his whole time to his profession (Ely Genealogy, op cit, pp 404-5). -------------------------------------------------- John and Lydia H 29, with their 3 children Wilson C 7, Iada M 2, and Anna F 2/12 b Apr, are located in the 1880 census (ELY JOHN H 29 W PA NJ MERCER PRINCETON TWP 1880; Series: T9 Roll: 788 Page: 153).
Note: In 1900 he and Lydia are by themselves living in an area surrounded by mostly professional and businessmen (ELY JOHN H 49 M W PA NJ ESSEX 5-WD NEWARK 1900; Series: T623 Roll: 963 Page: 33). At that time it was noted that only 2 of their 3 children were living, and their marriage was listed as 29 years.
Note: Living in the same place in 1910, their apparently widowed daughter Ida has moved home (ELY JOHN H 58 M W PA NJ ESSEX 5-WD NEWARK 1910; ELY JOHN H 58 M W PA NJ ESSEX 5-WD NEWARK 1910). It was the same family composition 10 years later (ELY JOHN H 68 M W NJ NJ ESSEX 9-WD; NEWARK CITY 1920; Series: T625 Roll: 1033 Page: 220).

Architects John H Ely and Wilson C Ely formed a well known father-and-son Newark architectural firm. John came to Newark in 1882 as a carpenter and builder and rose to become a prominent architect, and Wilson spent fifty-seven years designing buildings and later running the firm.
