This family tree is a work in progress. I am constantly making additions and corrections. I usually do not have any more information other than what is shown in my database especially for any names not in "all caps". The names in "all caps" are my direct line, and I may have additional information.

Text: The male line of the de Hertlington family expired with a William de Hertlington, whose will was proved at York on 30 June 1473. He left three daughters, Elizabeth, Agnes and Isabel, who shared his estate as co-heiresses, although two sons, Robert and Roger, are named in his will. Of the fate of his sons, nothing certain is known, but it may be presumed that they did not live to succeed to their father's lands. Elizabeth de Herthngton was the wife of Thomas Metcalfe, Esq., of Nappa Hall in Wensleydale, and the mother of Sir James Metcalfe mentioned later. Her sister Agnes, was married first to John Redman, and secondly to Robert Pudsey. By her first husband, Agnes has a son and heir, Richard, to whom, in 1481 she demised her lands in the County of York during her life,(128) and a daughter, Johanna, for whose benefit she settled lands in Lathley on 4 April 1486. At the time of this settlement Johanna was a minor. (129) She had also a daughter, Elizabeth, for whose marriage portion she made provision out of the rents of her estate in 1485.(130) Her son, Richard Redman, had a daughter and heiress, Elizabeth, who was married to Roger Metcalfe, of Beare Park in Wensleydale, a kinsman of Thomas Metcalfe of Nappa, the husband of Elizabeth de Hertlington, and their son and heir was the Leonard Metcalfe who, as will presently appear, took part in the Rising of the North in 1569. Isabel, the third daughter of William de Hertlington, was the wife of John Keighley, and by him had an only child and heiress, Agnes, who was married in 1475 to Robert Tempest.(131) Agnes died without issue, when her third share of the Hertlington property was divided between the representatives of her two aunts, Sir James Metcalfe of Nappa, and Roger Metcalfe of Beare Park (in right of his wife, Elizabeth Redman). The conveyance of a moiety of her share to Roger and Elizabeth is dated on 3 June 1526, (132) which date may be regarded as approximately that of Agnes Tempest's death.
