    Notes on this John Mulkey:

    Tricia,
One of my grandmothers, Sarah Mulkey was married to Boyd Jr.'s brother William. She too, wa s a daughter of John Mulkey and Polly Lewis. John Mulkey was not only my grandfather but al so my step-grandfather, he married a second time my Grandmother, Charity Stark Vernon, wido w of my Grandfather, Nehemiah Vernon. It even gets better. Charity Stark was a sister to my o ther Grandfather, James Stark.
John Mulkey married a third time a Sarah Williams.
I, like you, would like to find out where John Mulkey came from and who his parents were.
    Barbara Hobbs Pollack

What info can you give me about Charity Vernon I have kind of ignored John's 2nd and 3rd wif e now I find it something I would like to record Also John was in Tenn. For a Few Years My Jo hn Lewis was born there and 2 more childern do you know the county or town do you think Poll y had family there as often a man lives close to the wife's family thanks Sara

Sara, John Lewis, according to "The Mulkeys of America" was born close to Nashville, TN. H e died as you probably know at Yoncalla, Oregon at the home of Charles Applegate. I have no t checked out this fact but William Miller, husband of Sarah Mulkey had a cousin Malinda Mill er married to a Charles Applegate that was in Oregon. Isabella Mulkey was born in Rutherfor d County, TN on the 5 May 1807. Charlotte Mulkey was born in Rutherford County, TN on 15 Ju n 1815. War of 1812, Information provided by Grace Farmer, obtained from the war archives a t Washington D.C. : He enlisted as John Mulky in 2nd Regiment Mounted Gunman, Western Teness ee Militia, 1812. As a saddler in Capt. George Brandon's Company, Regiment commanded by Col . Newton Cannon. Sept. 24, 1813 when mustered into service - Nashville, to Dec. 22, 1813. Te rm of service charged 3 months 8 days. Pay per month $13.00. Allowance pay of horse from Sept . 24, 1813 to Jan 1, 1814 at 40 cents per day, 100 days, $40.00. Traveling allowance before m uster and after discharge at 25 cents per day, $2.50. Amount of pay $84.96. This was in Majo r General Amdrew Jackson's War against the "Hostile Creek Indians". On Sept. 25, 1815, Joh n Mulkey gave power of attorney to Joel Childress of Rutherford County, TN, to collect all mo ney owed him by such service. As for Johns wife, Charity Stark, She was born ca 1785 in Newb erry Co. South Carolina to Jeremiah Stark & Mary King. She died between 1840-1847 in Miller C ounty, Missouri. She was the widow of Nehemiah Vernon who died coming back to their home in R obertson County, TN from the Battle of New Orleans. She traveled with her brother, James Star k on into Cole County, Missouri. She married John Mulkey 26 July 1829 in Cole County Missouri . I have very little on Sarah Williams. She married John Mulkey on 25 July 1847. She died i n 1852 in Howard, MO. Barbara Hobbs Pollack

More on the ancesty of this John:

John Mulkey appears in the 1790 census in Ashe County, North Carolina, if I recall. So does a nother newlywed, James Mulkey. This latter person eventually moved to Jackson County, Missour i, as some of his children did.
Philip Mulkey, who went to Knox Co., KY, was probably a brother of theirs (his children als o went to Missouri).
I believe they were probably the sons of James Mulkey, who was in Ashe Co. (earlier Wilkes) i n the 1770s and 1780s. This James may have been the son of another James, who was in Orange C o., NC, in the 1740s, if I recall, and this latter James was probably the son of John Mulke y (d. 1736).
