• Note:
Sugar Jones may have been named for Capt. Sugan or Sugar Jones, s/o
Edward Jones, III of Isle of Wight County , Virginia and Granville Dist. North Carolina who
m. Abigail Sugan, d/o Eliz. and John Sugan (or Jean Sucre) a Huguenot.
Sugan or Sugar Jones m. Sarah Franklin who m. 2nd Nathaniel Henderson.
Sugan was born 1727, d. 1761, and served in the Indian Wars in command of
militia from Granville County , North Carolina (This research prepared by the late
James Jones Banks, titled "Descendants of Capt. James Jones, is
available printed from Mrs. Sarah Banks of Rome, Ga.) Helen Tice <hlltice@bellsouth.net>

Est. of Sugar Jones, dec'd. Rbt. H. Jones admin. bond of 2,000 pds.

Sugar JONES is written Shugan JONES in one of Marilu Burch
Smallwood's books, on page 299, of SOME COLONIAL AND REVOLUTIONARY FAMILIES
OF North Carolina, VOL. II. She apparently didn't know who Shugan/Sugar
married as she left it blank.

This is probably the Capt. Sugan JONES in the Granvill County, North Carolina militia in
Col. William EATON’s regiment in roll taken 8 October 1754. In his
grandfather’s will he is mentioned as “Sugars Jones.” On 3 March 1752 Sugar
Jones witnessed a deed between John Person and Henry Person, executors of
John Person, desceased and Thomas Turner of Edgecombe County, North Carolina for 244
acres in Granville County, North Carolina on N side of Bufelow Branch . On 28 May 1755
Henry Ginnins sold to his son Henry Ginnins all lanmd on S side of choco
except that part belonging to Sugar Jones below Branch on Tar River path.
Witness, Sugar Jones, Benj. Ward, Thos. Fox. I would use the correct spelling
of his name, SUGAR, except for the fact that SUGAN JONES was mentioned
frequently in early North Carolina history. Warren County , North Carolina
