    Thomas Allen's notes: John lived in Isle of Wight County, Virginia Elizabeth was the widow of Thomas Clay of Surry County and possibly of Colonel James Mason when she married John. John "Shugan" is the name for him in other sites. Dates of birth and death vary from genealogy site to genealogy site. John's will was probated in Isle of Wight County, Virginia VA, on September 25, 1726 and originally dated Dec. 1, 1726. (Isle of Wight Will Book III, p. 45). There is a record of a John Sugars, who first married Elizabeth Caly, widow of Thomas Clay 1688 (W.B. 2, p. 40). His second wife was also named Elizabeth, widow of Drew (B.K. 1711, p. 48)
    The Sugars family was in Virginia prior to the founding of the Manakin Town Huguenot settlement by new immigrants in 1700.
