  • Note:
marriage only lasted 3 years when my (black sheep) ancestor left her
pregnant and destitute with her mother and headed west. (Deed Book 14,
1836-1838, pge 64) Joseph N. Green and his wife Amanda Green brought
suit in Chancery Court against James Parsons (her brother) of Hardy County ,
VA and won a decree for $1000 plus interest due her under the will of her
father James Parsons. This was to obtain the inheritance due her when she
became 21, 20 Sept. 1821. In their testimony in this suit, Amanda and
her mother, Rebecca, explained in graphic detail how her husband had left
her with child, refusing any support payments saying he was broke and
anyway had better use for his money

AMANDA PARSONS IN VA This marriage only lasted 3 years when my (black sheep) ancestor left Amanda pregnant and destitute with her mother and headed west.

Green and his wife Amanda Green brought suit in Chancery Court against James Parsons (her brother) of Hardy County, VA and won a decree for $1000 plus interest due her under the will of her father James Parsons. In their testimony in this suit, Amanda and her mother, Rebecca, explained in graphic detail how her husband had left her with child, refusing any support payments saying he was broke and anyway had better use for his money, etc. -- not complimentary to my gggrandfather as you might imagine. Joseph N. was not there, but his buddy and cousin, William Godophin Williams, was in touch with him and represented him as best he could. Jim Walker Laguna Hills, CA

KEZIAH STARK IN MO: Mary Ellen Green, was orphaned in about 1853 in Daviess County Missouri when her father, Joseph Nevil Green, and mother, Kaziah Stark, presumably both died at or about the same time. Mary Ellen was about 12 years old at the time. She and her younger sister, Harriet, were sent to live with her mother's brother, Andrew Jackson Stark, in Madison County , Iowa. Strangely, since we know a lot about Mary Ellen from my great uncles who worshipped her and wrote about her, there have never been any details as to how her parents died. I have never been able to find a record of her parents death, and suspect there may be more to the story.

Joseph Nevil Green, son of Jones Green and Mary Nevill of Hardy County, VA, married first Amanda Molonica Parsons 1832 in Moorefield, Hardy County Virginia but abandoned her and his unborn child to run off "to Missouri" with his cousin Washington Godolfin Williams. Williams returned to Moorefield and became a doctor, but Joseph did not.

The 1850 census shows him, aged 45, living in Daviess County with Keziah and four Green children (Mary Ellen 9, Harriet 6, William T. 1, and James, one month). Also living with them was his sister, Agnes B. Green and 2 Mayfield children who I cannot explain. I have always wondered if perhaps Keziah died and Joseph N. did another of his disappearing acts three years later which the family has quietly chosen to forget. James G. Amanda M. Green, 65, in the 1860 Moorefield, Hardy Co. census, living with daughter & son-in-law, Rebecca F. & Wm. H. Ogden.
