About five years before the Civil war, Grandpa Wheeler moved by covered wagon to Independence County, Arkansas. There were three sons who were born in Tennessee. Another son was born at Newport, Arkansas. He was born on the journey that took them though "Nigerwool" swamp. This swamp covered land from the Mississippi River to the rise of Crowley's Ridge. At certain times of the year there were two places that could be crossed. One was up near Lilbourn, Missouri, and the other was near Caruthersville, Missouri. At the time of the Civil War Grandma died and was buried near Batesville, Arkansas. The tragedy of this story was that our Grandmother never returned to her home in Virginia and only a few letters passed throughout the time preceding the war.
