A sister (name unknown) born before Mary died at age 17 of a blood disease. Mary, now being the eldest left for the U.S. to earn money for the family when her father died of pneumonia, leaving her mother with young children and very little to support them. Mary worked as a domestic (maid / housekeeper) and sent money home.
After being in the U.S. a year, Mary met Joseph Vanac at his sister?s home. (They were related by marriage - Joseph?s brother Vaclav had married Mary?s sister Bo?ena.) Mary
returned to Czechoslovakia to ask her mother whether or not to marry. Joseph had given her a ring before she left. Mary returned and they were married and had a daughter Lillian.

Marie ?imánek (Mary) was born on August 18, 1898. She was the second eldest, her older sister was sickly and later died at age 17. Her father had died of pneumonia, leaving eight young children. Mary worked from the time she was 12 years old in service in homes (housekeeper, etc.) in adjoining towns. When she was 24 years old it was decided she would go to the U.S sponsored by her mother's brother John Klecka, who was a tailor in New York City.
She arrived in the U.S. September 24, 1922 and went immediately into domestic service, sending her earnings home. She met Joseph Vanac who in time asked for her to marry him. Undecided, she went home to her mother wearing his ring. She returned and they were married October 16, 1926 and had a daughter Lillie. They lived in Manhattan for two years and moved to Elmhurst, Queens and bought land in Greenville, NY. (Actually closer to South
Westerlo) where they built a summer home where they planned to retire. After Joseph died in 1960, Mary lived with her daughter in Elmont and summered in Greenville. She died of a stroke in 1973.
Mary returned to visit Czechoslovakia three times. In 1932 with her husband and daughter
and twice in the 1960's after Joseph died.
