    She held university scholarship in sociology 1933-1934. Taught Dupont High School, held post of Dean of Instruction and professor at Queens Chicora College, Charlotte, North Carolina. In 1936 she became Dean of Women and lecturer at University of Pennsylvania. She was former President of the American Association of University Women and of the International Federation of University Women. She was representative of the United States on the Social Commission of the United Nations 1955-1961. She has traveled widely and studied social conditions in many foreign countries. Now retired.

    Althea died a year ago on Jan. 6. She had been in a nursing home. She was a very classy and wonderful person.

    ALTHEA HOTTEL, FORMER PENN DEAN
    Althea Kratz Hottel, 92, former dean of women at the University of Pennsylvania, died of congestive heart failure Thursday at the Beaumont Retirement Commuinty in Bryn Mawr.
    Mrs. Hottel had taken an early interest in women's issues.
    "She wrote her dissertation [for her doctorate] on the subject of the incarceration of women in the 1920's," said her longtime friend Paul Riale.
    She had been national president of the American Association of University Women from 1947 to 1951 and its Philadelphia president from 1944 to 1946.
    Mrs. Hottel was director of the Commission on the Education of Women in of the American Council on Education from 1953 to 1955 and chairman of the Standards Committe of teh International Federation of University Women from 1956 to 1962.
    She lectured in the sociology department and was dean of the College of Women at Penn from 1936 to 1959.
    Mrs. Hottel chaired the committee for establishing a community college in Philadelphia in 1961 and chaired the Philadelphia Commission on Higher Education from 1963 to 1965. She had also represented the United States on the Social Commission of the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations from 1955 to 1961.
    Mrs. Hottel was born in Lansdale. She attended Penn, earning a bachelor's degree in education in 1929, a master's degree in sociology in 1934, and a doctorate in sociology in 1940. She received the Philadelphia Gimbel Award in 1947 and was honored as a Distinguished Daughter of Pennsylvania in 1950. She published a book, How Fare American Women, in 1955.
    Mrs. Hottel held honorary degrees from about a dozen colleges and universities.
    She had lived in Bryn Mawr from 1954 to 1990, when she moved to the Beaumont Retirement Community.
    Her husband of many years, Abram Stouffer Hottel Jr., died several years ago.
    Mrs. Hottel was buried at West Laurel Hill Cemetery, Bala Cynwyd. A memorial service is planned for the spring.
