He was a farmer om Limerick Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, and for forty-one years he had a stall in the Farmer's Market, Norristown. When he discontinued his market business, one of the Norristown newspapers printed the following:

"Last Saturday John G. Spare, of Limerick, made his last trip to the Norristown market as a regular attendant, after being in the business continuously for forty-one years and two weeks. During all these years he missed very few trips, each week driving to and from Norristown, a distance of twelve miles, or twenty-four miles for the round trip. In the forty-one years Mr. Spare drove not less than 51,216 miles in going to and from market. This does not include side trips he made in gathering his produce.
"On his first trip to market Mr. Spare stopped at the hotel of the late Jesse Gabel. He was a regular patron of the elder Mr. Gabel as well as of his son, P. K. Gabel.
"Mr. Spare on Saturday said 'There is not a man in the Farmers' Market who was there when I began forty-one years ago.'"

He was a leader in civic and religious activities. He was a member of the Limerick Evangelical Church, serving as Sunday School superintendent and class leader for many years.
