At the age of 14 he left home and seved as farm laborer. In 1862 he enlisted in the 15th Regiment New Jersey Volunteers for three years. In 1863 he was appointed Corporal. He was engaged in some of the severest battles in the Civil War including Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville. In the great battle of Spottsylvania (C. H.), in which his regiment was nearly annihilated, he fall a martyr to his country's couase on May 12, 1864, from a bayonet wound in the mouth and a rifle ball which entered his right eye. "A brave and gallant soldier, and a true patriot."
