    Kratz book of 1892 says:

He prepared himself for college in the common and high schools of his native state, and supported himself by teaching. He first entered Denison University, Granville, Ohio, where he remained two years, and then completed his college course at Wooster University, Wooster, Ohio, graduating with the degree of B. S. in 1874. Later the degree of M. A. was granted him by his Alma Mater, for subsequent work performed. He at once entered upon the work of teaching and has been superintendent and principal of schools in several important cities, principally those of Bucyrus, Ohio, and Dexter, Michigan. In both of these States he was frequently engaged in the institute work by the side of their best educators. In 1881 he went abroad to Europe, taking his family with him, and during two years resided in London. While in Europe be made a special study of systems of education, and methods of instruction. He met many of the leading educators of the old world and became familiar with their theories. Opportunities were offered him to observe school work there which he readily and profitably availed himself of, and returned to this country much broadened in his views of education. The year 1885 found hint installed in the schools of Mitchell, Dakota, as superintendent, a position he held for four years. He organized and graded these schools, and put them in a condition second to none in the country. His pupils have found easy admission to the schools of our leading cities. He promptly identified himself with the educators of the state, and has been present at every important educational meeting in Dakota since 1886. When the Educational Association organized the reading circle department he was made the chief officer, and in turn made the reading circle one of the vital educational forces of the State. He was three times unanimously chosen president of the State Educational Association, an honor not before conferred on any member. He was also prominently mentioned for the position of Territorial Superintendent of Public Instruction. At the first election for State officers, the leading educators and teachers all over the State made urgent appeal to him to consent to become a candidate for the office of State Superintendent of Public Instruction. Against his better judgment he was finally induced to make an effort to secure the Republican nomination. Unfortunately preceding nominations on the ticket, bunched the nominces in his part of the State, and he was defeated, although even then he received a large number of votes in the convention.

In the spring of 1889, he was called to the chair of Pedagogy and Principalship of the Normal Department of the University of South Dakota, which position he still occupies. Recently he completed a post graduate course in Philosophy and Pedagogy in Wooster University and received the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. "In November 1891, he was unanimously chosen Superintendert of the city schools, to succeed Professor Charles W. Deane, resigned," at an increase of salary, which was fixed at $2,100 a year. In addition to his other duties he has the chief managemeint of the South Dakota State Teacher's Circle, conducts Teachers' Institutes, lectures from time to time, and occasionally contributes on educational topics to the press. At the first South Dakota Chautauqua held in the summer of 1891at Lake Madison, he was director of the summer school, and was unaniniously re-elected as director for 1892. Taken altogether it may be seen that Dr. Kratz is an exceedingly busy man.

    Kratz book of 1982 says:

Graduated with B.S. in 1874. Later earned M.A. and Ph.D. degrees. After teaching he became Superintendent of Schools at Bucyrus, Ohio and Dexter, Michigan.

In 1881 he took his family to Europe for two years where he made special study of systems of education and instruction and met many leading educators and improved his skills and broadened his views.

He became Superintendent of Schools at Mitchell, South Dakota for four years, was three times chosen as President of the State Education Association. At one time he ran for office of State Superintendent of Public Instruction, but defeated.

In 1889 he was called as professor at University of South Dakota. in 1891 he accepted position as Superintendent of City Schools.
