    Descendants of Harman Kemper
    Generation No. 1
    1. Harman6 Kemper (Johannes5, Johann George (Hans Jorgen)4, Johannes3, Johann2, Friedrich1) was born in Germantown, Virginia, and died March 29, 1774 in Fauquier County, Virginia. He married Catherine Cuntze, daughter of Johann Cuntze and Anna Reinschmidt. She was born Abt. 1713 in Possibly England or on the voyage to America, and died Bef. 1839 in Botetourt County, Virginia.
    Notes for Harman Kemper:
Taken from Nassau-Siegen Immigrants page 385:

    The age of Catherine would indicate that Harman was the second child of John Kemper and born about 1718/1719. This is also indicated by the fact that the first grant that John Kemper got for his children in 1726 was on to his sons, John Peter and Harman Kemper (Kemper Genealogy pg. 6). Harman's sons seem to have spelled the name Camper instead of Kemper. Harman died in Fauquier Co., Va. in 1774, his inventory being dated March 29, 1774 (Kemper Genealogy pg.61;
Fauquier Co. Minute Book 1773-80 pages 139 & 171) For some reason the widow, Catherine Kamper and the son Peter, relinquished their rights of administration, and the administration was turned over to Arthur Morson (Minute Book 1773-80 page 138), relationship unknown. In 1774 and 1775 Catherine Kemper (called the elder in one deed), widow of Harman Kemper, and Peter Kemper and Alice his wife (Peter is called eldest son in the last deed) deeded all of Harman Kemper's land in Fauquier Co. to John Kemper of Culpeper Co., Harman Button and Peter Greenleaves (Fauquier Co. D. B. 6, pages 69, 71 & 132) and the whole family moved away, probably to Shenandoah Co., Va. Catherine (Cuntze) Kemper was still living on March 27, 1775, the date of the last deed.

Kemper, John Spouse : Fisher, Martha Marriage date : May 2, 1787
Kemper, Peter Spouse : Fisher, Susanna Marriage date : Oct 18, 1788

The following is the brother of John and Peter, wonder if the above two marriages are actually the ones we have been looking for and can't find. They are the correct time frame to be Jesse's brothers?
Kemper, Jesse Spouse : Kemper, Lucy Marriage date : Feb 9, 1794 Fauquier Co., Va.

    Notes for Catherine Cuntze:
The birth information is unclear on her.

Children of Harman Kemper and Catherine Cuntze are:
+ 2 i. Peter7 Camper, born Abt. 1740 in Fauquier County, Virginia; died 1788 in Botetourt County, Virginia.
3 ii. Jesse Camper, died Abt. 1844 in Botetourt County, Virginia. He married Lucy Kemper February 9, 1793/94 in Fauquier Co., Virginia; born 1778 in Virginia.

    Notes for Jesse Camper:
Camper law suit 1852: Jesse died about 7 or 8 years ago, leaving a widow, Lucy who died about 1850.
Jesse died intestate without leaving any children or descendants of any child or children. Jesse died a very old man and he had out lived all his brothers and sisters.

Marriage Index: KY, NC, TN, VA, WV, 1728-1850

Kemper, Jesse Spouse : Kemper, Lucy Marriage date : Feb 9, 1794 Fauquier Co., Va.

    Notes for Lucy Kemper:
1850 Va. Census, Botetourt Co.: Lucy Camper age 72 born in Virginia, living with her is Richard Camper age 50 and Alice Camper age 48 both born in Va. and George Camper age 14, born in Va. I don't know their relationships to Lucy as she and Jesse had no children. Camper lawsuit states Lucy died about the year 1850, the census was taken August 22, 1850.

    Kamper, Peter
    Kamper, Peter, Jr.
    Kemper, John
    Kemper, Charles (Lt.)
    Kemper, Tilman
    Kemper, James

Note from Sue W. Lee, Alleghany Highland Gen. Soc.: Peter died shortly after coming to Botetourt Co. from Shenandoah Co., Va. Peter and his wife, Alice James moved to Botetourt Co. around 1784, following the Rev. War with his brother John, who had married Sarah James, sister of Alice. They settled on Back Creek, Botetourt Co., Va. There is still some confusion as to Alice's maiden name, have not found anything to document her name was James?

Notes for Alice (Elsey or Alsy) James ??:
Have seen her name as Ailsy, Elsey, Alice, probably just variations due to spelling by different people?

Children of Peter Camper and Alice ?? are:
8 i. Harman8 Camper, born 1770 in Germantown, Virginia; died 1852 in Botetourt County, Virginia. He married Hannah Camper November 26, 1801 in Botetourt County, Virginia; died Bef. 1852.

    Notes for Harman Camper:
Will book "H", page 400: The will of Harman Camper dated February , 1851 and probated in Botetourt County at the March Court, 1852 leaves all his property to his son, George W. Camper, who has supported him in his old age; mentions his other children, but not by name; and mentions his brother, Francis Camper, decd., of Alabama. This Harman Camper was the son of Peter.

The 1850 Va. census: Living in Botetourt Co., Va. with his son George W., Harmon was listed as 80 years old.

    Notes for Hannah Camper:
Kemper law suit 1852: Hanna was the daughter of Sarah. Sarah was the sister of Peter so Harmon married his cousin. But the said Hannah, the wife of the said Harman and daughter of the said Sarah is now dead and had the following children: George W. Camper, Alfred Camper, Peter Camper, Elizabeth Camper, Fatima Camper, and Alice Camper. The said Eliza Camper married William H. Oiler, but she has been dead for some time and has left the following children: Narcissa C., Emily Jane and Minerva V. Oiler. The said Elizabeth Camper is also dead and has left three infant complaintants: Matthew J., George E., and William P. Camper as her children and heirs. The Said Alice Camper has intermarried with a certain Joel Lewis, now of the County of Rockbridge.

The above is confusing in that it list Eliza and Elizabeth as two separate people, yet they were not both listed as children of Harman and Hannah??? Need to look at the original document to check the conflicting information on this part. Note: There was and Eliza and an Elizabeth.

9 ii. Sherrod Camper, born 1771 in Virginia; died September 1850. He married Nancy Tooley March 22, 1805/06 in Bedford County, Virginia; born 1775 in Virginia; died 1851 in Botetourt County, Virginia.

    Notes for Sherrod Camper:

    Notes for Sarah Camper:

    Notes for Elizabeth (Betsy) Camper:
Per the 1852 Camper lawsuit: Elizabeth had one illegitimate son Erastus Camper, now living in Botetourt Co. Elizabeth then married Benjamin Craft and had two children, William and Mary. Mary Craft married John Nace, Orator of the lawsuit.

Marriage record found in Botetourt Co. Marriages 1770 to 1853, Vol. II, page363. States Betsy, daughter of Peter Camper, deceased. Sherrod Camper, brother test. age of bride as over 21. Married by Minister John Helms. Minister return states his name as Benjamin Craft as does the Camper lawsuit, probably Daniel Benjamin Craft, however, he went by Benjamin Craft.

    Notes for Daniel Benjamin Craft:
Marriage Index: MD, NC, VA, 1624-1915

Craft, Daniel Spouse : Camper, Betsy Marriage date : Dec 31, 1807
Craft, Daniel Spouse : Hamilton, Mary Marriage date : Jun 29, 1814

Marriage record shows name of Daniel Craft, Camper lawsuit states his name as Benjamin Craft. Believe his name was Daniel Benjamin Craft? The 1852 suit further states that Elizabeth has been dead for many years, apparently Benjamin's second wife was Mary Hamilton, or Mary Sally Hamilton or Sally was his third wife?

    Notes for Valentine G. Camper:
Valentine is not listed on the 1850 Va. Census.

    Notes for Mary Agnue:
Father's name was William, from marriage record.

Marriage Notes for Valentine Camper and Mary Agnue:
Marriage license date March 31, 1824 Botetourt Co., Virginia.

    43 x. Matilda Camper, born 1813.

    Notes for Matilda Camper:

    7. Sarah7 Camper (Harman6 Kemper, Johannes5, Johann George (Hans Jorgen)4, Johannes3, Johann2, Friedrich1) died Bef. 1845.

    Notes for Sarah Camper:
Camper law suit 1852: The orators were unable to say weather Jesse had other sisters, Sarah died many years ago, leaving children whose names and numbers are unknown, except as to one of them whose name was Hannah and who intermarried with Harman Camper herein before referred to as one of the children of Peter Camper.

    Child of Sarah Camper is:
44 i. Hannah8 Camper, died Bef. 1852. She married Harman Camper November 26, 1801 in Botetourt County, Virginia; born 1770 in Germantown, Virginia; died 1852 in Botetourt County, Virginia.

    Notes for Hannah Camper:
Kemper law suit 1852: Hanna was the daughter of Sarah. Sarah was the sister of Peter so Harmon maried his cousin.

Note: There was a daughter Eliza and a daughter Elizabeth, shown on the original document I found.
