    Records of old Pendleton Co. (no longer exits), SC, reveal that William Br uce sold 57 acres on the south side of the Saluda River in Pendleton Co. f or 40 pounds, the land having been granted to him Jan. 4, 1790. "The Ind ex to South Carolina Land Grants, 1784-1800", show that there were two la nd grants made to a William Bruce in 1790.

    Know all men by these presents that I Charles BRUCE of Greenville Distri ct in the State aforesaid in consideration of one hundred and forty dolla rs to me in hand paid by Hananiah RAY of the State and district aforesa id ... sell ... all that tract and parcel of land supposed to contain o ne hundred acres (be the same more or less) Situate in Greenville Distri ct aforesaid on the North Side of Shoal Branch of Clear Creek of South Tyg er River and on both sides of a Waggon Road leading to market, beginni ng on a Persimon on the bank of Shoal Branch aforesaid from thence N8 0W to a Chestnut then S80W to a Hickory thence S80E to a Stake (on ? lin e) thence with said line to the corner over the Waggon Road, thence to t he head of the Branch N17W to Enoch BENSON'S line ... warrant and defend t he s'd tract of land of one hundred acres (more or less) unto the s'd Hana niah RAY his heirs and assigns ...

I do hereby certify th at on the 20th day of September 1800 Hannah BRUCE wife of the within nam ed Charles BRUCE ... renounce all Right and Title of Dower ... the 20th Se ptember AD 1800

    Charles Bruce is identified as a brother of William Bruce in an old not e, still in family hands, dated Sept. 15,1804. The note reads "for whi ch the said William Bruce has assigned one hundred dollar to the said Char les Bruce that was due to him by his brother Charles of South Carolina."

    Charles Bruce was of Anderson Co., SC, and was one of the original settle rs of the "Fork", a section of the county between the Seneca and Tugalo Ri vers.
