  • Note:
This Benjamin was probably born in York Co., PA, moving from there to Frederick/Washington Co., MD before moving West to Washington Co., PA. It is possible that though he is listed as living in both Frederick and Washington Counties, he actually lived in the same place, Cumberland, since Frederick encompassed Washington until Washington was formed in 1776. We have placed Benjamin as son of John Freeland Sr. of York Co., PA in this report, though there is only circumstantial evidence. He and Aaron, as well as Uriah and Stephen, are of the right age to be sons of John. We know that Robert was also a son of John. The Flowers family lived near Freelands in Kent Co., Delaware, York Co., PA, and Greene Co., PA, so they seem to have traveled to the same places and are thought to be related by marriage. A Uriah Freeland, believed to be a brother of this Benjamin, witnessed the will of John Flowers in York Co., PA in 1772. Benjamin Freeland was warranted property adjacent to the Flowers family in Shrewsbury Twp., and John Freeland's land bordered the land of John Flowers Jr. Benjamin Freeland and son Aaron attended the estate sale for Thomas Flowers in 1804, in Greene Co., PA, buying several items each, and Benjamin performed functions in conjunction with Thomas's estate. There is circumstantial evidence to support the supposition that Thomas Flowers's wife Miriam was Benjamin's sister. Benjamin's brother Aaron moved to Mason Co., KY and had a son named Aaron who moved to Daviess Co., IN. Mason County, KY is on the Ohio River, and many families from Greene and other counties on the Ohio and Monongahela traveled to Kentucky and Ohio via flatboats when most of the land in Greene County had been settled, so it is possible that Aaron settled briefly in Greene Co. PA before travelling to Kentucky. A Freeland genealogy states that Benjamin's wife's name was Nancy. (Robert Eugene Knowles, Knowles/Lockhart/Chaney/Freeland Genealogy (Ancestry World Tree <http://awt.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=9214&id=I0637) There was a FWF 80-90 living with Benjamin Freeland Jr. in the 1830 census of Monongahela Twp., Greene Co., PA who could be his mother Nancy.

Freeland, Benjamin. Private in the Skipton District Militia on April 17, 1776 under Capt. Thomas Waring. Listed next to him is a George Free, who could be of the Free Family of Baltimore Co., MD.

EARLY CENSUS FOR FREELAND IN GREENE AND FAYETTE COUNTIES:
There were no Freelands listed in the 1773 tax list for Bedford Co., PA, which encompassed the future Greene County. Benjamin Freeland is not found in any tax records for Washington Co., PA, though Robert Freeland was there by 1787. (Tax and Exoneration Lists, 1781-1789, for Washington Co., FHL microfilm # 1027065, Item 1)
1790 Greene Twp., Washington Co., PA (no twp., but evidently Greene because they were grouped with Aaron, Thomas, and David Flowers, who were in Greene Twp.)
    Benjamin, 1 FWM over 16, 5 FWM under 16, 6 FWF
Living next to Benjamin is Robert with 1 FWM over 16, 4 FWM under 16, 4 FWF. By 1800 Robert had moved to Bath Co., KY.
Also in the same county: James, 1 FWM over 16, 2 FWM under 16, 3 FWF (but he is in a different twp., since he is not grouped with the others) this James was Benjamin's son.

    Freeland, Benjamin, 1 FWM 10-15, 1 FWM 16-25, 1 FWM 45 and over, 2 FWF under 10, 2 FWF 16-25, 1 FWF 45 and over.

Susannah Freeland (living next to Aaron) with 2 FWF under 10, 1 FWF 16-25 (we don't know who this is--evidently a widow)

1800, German Twp., Fayette Co., PA
Benjimin Freeland, 1 FWM 45 and over, 1 FWF 10-15, 1 FWF 26-44 (Owned a tavern in Fayette Co. We do not know his place of origin. His sons moved to Louisiana)

    Benjamin Freeland, Jr. 2 FWM under 10, 1 FWM 26-44, 1 fWF 26-44
Benjamin Freeland (evidently Sr., but nothing more) 1 FWM 10-15, 1 FWM 16-25, 1 FWM 45 and over, 1 FWF 16-25, 1 FWF 45 and over (probably the Benjamin of the 1790 Greene Twp. census)

1820, Dunkard Twp., Greene Co., PA
Benjamin Freeland, 2 FWM to 10, 2 FWM 10-16, 1 FWM 26-45, 1 FWM 45 and up, 1 FWF to 10, 1 FWF 16-26, 1 FWF 26-45, 1 FWF 45 and up (this appears to be the combined families of Benjamins Sr. and Jr.)

Patent-Oct. 30, 1788, 125.27 acres to Gotfried Somwald (Note: This wasn't far from a parcel called "Codoras Falls" which was Surveyed to John Flower)
Benjamin was taxed for a Hazel Grove in Washington County MD. In the 1783 tax list for Washington Co., we find: Benjamin Freeland. Hazel Grove, 50 acres. WA Cumberland p. 8. MSA S1161-10-8. 1/4/5/53 (Maryland State Archives. State Agency Series Listing: Maryland Indexes, Assessment of 1783, Index (online database) MSA S1437 <http://www.msa.md.gov/msa/stagser/s1400/s1437/html/1437wa.html>)
Evidently the tax for property in York Co. was collected in Maryland, though this is not clear.

January 17, 1774. Deed. Benjamin Freeland "OF FREDERICK COUNTY, MARYLAND" to Henry Long of Baltimore Co., MD. For sixty-six pounds, "a certain piece or parcel of land situate ... in Shrewsbury Twp., in the County of York and Province of Pennsylvania. Beginning at a marked chesnut, thence by Stephen Freeland's Land, North eight degrees, East ninety-eight perches to a marked chesnut, North eleven degrees, East one hundred and ninety perches, to a marked white oak. Thence by John Flowers Land, West forty-seven perches to a marked black oak, thence by Conrad Fruches land ... thence by Robert Freeland's land ... containing fifty-four acres and ninety perches ... called Codorus Spring. Wit. Henry Miller, Uriah Freeland. Copied 1790 by Wm. Barnitz Recorder. (Deeds, 1749-1859; Index to deeds, 1749-1912, York County, Pennsylvania, FHL microfilm # 22,106, Book 2F, pp. 283-284)

According to Freeland and Allied Families (quarterly) "Benjamine Freeland sold his land in York Co., PA on the 17th of Jan. 1774 for 66 pounds which was next to the land of Robert Freeland. Benjamine Freeland was a residence (sic) of Frederick Co., Maryland at that time." (Issue 11, p. 201) The parcel sold in 1774 also bordered land of Stephen Freeland and John Flowers Jr. and was called Codorus Spring. It was sold to Henry Long of Baltimore County, MD. Uriah Freeland was witness to the sale. (Copy of deed found in the Freeland file at Cornerstone Genealogical Society, Waynesburg, PA)

We have not found any original warrants for land in Greene Co. Deed records have not been searched.

A record copied from the Examiner, Vol. 1, Marriages and Deaths, 1796-1833 found at the Citizens Library, Washington Co., PA, p. 135, states that on Saturday, July 14, 1832, Mrs. Mary Freeland died "in the 86th year of her age, an old and respectable inhabitant of this place." We have not discovered the identity of this Mary.

    WILL:
Benjamin Freeland's will was written August 8, 1820 and probated June 13, 1825. He was living in Dunkard Twp. at the time of the writing. The will bequeaths all of his plantation in Dunkard Twp. with appurtenances as well as personalty, livestock, and cash accounts to wife Nancy. At Nancy's death all would go to his children. Nancy is executrix. (Will Book 1, Greene County, p. 268, FHL microfilm # 864,503) A series of deed records of land sold to Lewis Gapen in 1832-33 by "heirs and legatees" of Benjamin Freeland identify some of Benjamin's children and their later places of residence.
