'Al' Moses, 78, passed away peacefully with his family at his side Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004, in Riverside Regional Medical Center. A native of Salem, Va., he had been a Newport News resident since 1952. He retired from the Newport News Shipyard as a welder after 38 years of service. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict with the U.S. Army 780th field artillery and was a member of Parkview Baptist Church where he was an usher, deacon and a member of the building committee and the counting committee. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and five brothers. Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Lillie B. 'Lil' Moses; son, Danny Moses and his companion, Judy Lester, of Yorktown; daughter, Sherry Summers and her husband, Mike, of Keezletown, Va.; three grandchildren, Kristin, Kevin, and Brian Summers; sister, Eva May Bess of Salem, Va.; two brothers, Clarence Moses and his wife, Laura, of Nashville, Tenn., and Frank Moses of Toledo, Ohio. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 20, at Peninsula Funeral Home. A funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 21, at the funeral home by the Rev. Lawrence J. Biermann, Dr. R. Furman Kenney and the Rev. Stan Putney. Burial will follow at Peninsula Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to Parkview Baptist Church Building Fund.
