OBITUARY (printed in unknown paper but probably Wytheville VA): News was received in Wytheville Sunday of the death of Mr. L. L. Jewel at Saranac Lake, New York, where he had gone with the hopes of regaining his health. Mr. Jewel was thirth-eight years of age and a native of Christiansburg and was one of the brightest men to graduate in the Engineering Department of the Virginia Polytechnic Institute. He married Miss Retta Gibboney of Wytheville, who preceded him to the grave by about four months.
Mr. Jewel located in Pittsburg after he finished his college course and rapidly rose in his profession. He was connected with the engineering department of some of the largest contracting companies in Pittsburg. He was in charge of the construction work on the locks at the Panama canal, also President of the Columbia Structural Company and United States Vice consul to Columbia.
He contracted tuberculosis while in the Canal Zone, which was the cause of his death. His companies, his home town and his State have lost a useful citizen and at an age when he had not reached the zenith of his usefulness.
The remains arrived in Wytheville this morning on Forty-one and were taken to the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. Haller Gibboney on Main street. The funeral service will be held this afternoon at five o'clock from the Episcopal church, conducted by Rev. F. H. Craighill, the rector, of which he had been a useful and consistent member. Rev. J. Otis Meade of Roanoke, Virginia, assisted in conducting the funeral.
The interment was in the East End cemetery beside his beloved wife, who was only laid to rest a few months since.
The active pall bearers were: Messers. J. D. Pobst, J. A. Whitman, R. R. Hickock, Randolph Alexander, Ernest Spiller, Verron Crowgey. The honorary pall bearers were: Messrs. J. J. A. Powell, J. I. Widmeyer, J. B. Shelton, Drs. W. H. Cassell, Peyton Green, J. V. Haller, W. H. Ribble and Mr. M. L. Harrison.
